Is this mushroom edible

    Found five of these growing on an old stump. They are huge. Don’t know anything about these.

    Looks like dryads saddle, known as pheasant back. Awesome looking, not high on the eating list.

    They’re alright, but they have to be young and prime. Big old ones aren’t good.

    Keep your eyes open for Hen of the Woods (maitake, grifola frondosa). They’re starting to show up. Still lobsters and chickens out too. Chanterelles are slowing way down with the cooler weather.

    Agree with both of these statements. Leave those old pheasant backs alone and keep your eyes out for the Hens, one of the best mushrooms you can find.

    Not very good if you ask me. Even the young small ones taste like the wood they grow on.
