Is this a wolf or coyote?

Got this on trail cam near Embarrass. I’ve never really seen either up close. After googling how to tell the difference I was leaning towards Coyote but I think it’s too big. In next post I’ll attach some reference pictures.

These pictures are a 62lb dog and deer for size comparison.

It’s clearly a wolf. The best way to distinguish between the two is to look at the length of the legs compared to the height of the body from the bottom of the chest to the top of the back.

A coyotes legs are barely as tall as their chest a wolf’s legs are much longer than the height from the top of their back to the bottom of their chest, almost twice the height.

Also if you look at the mass of the head it’s much larger and thicker than a coyote’s head would be.

    Coyotes are surprisingly small.

    I agree that it’s definitely a wolf.

It is amazing how they can hear the small click of the camera and look at it. They may not know what it is but, still look with caution.

Cool pictures and video. I had a close wolf encounter a few years ago, it came within 20 yards of me while sitting on the ground deer hunting. Was a little uneasy about hunting out there by myself after that.

Nice video. I really enjoy the video feature on the trail cams. I don’t use it all the time, but in the summer it’s really enjoyable.

I doubt there are many coyotes left in the Embarrass area. There might be a few near towns, but the wolves are going to hunt them down and it won’t go well for the coyote.

In the Hinckley area, the coyote population is half or less of what it used to be. The decline coincided exactly with a major upswing in the wolf population so not hard to work out what’s going on.

Is this a good thing? I’m generally curious. I would think have a larger wolf population and smaller coyote population would be a good thing overall, but I am no biologist or expert of any means.

I think you guys are all wrong. That is definitely just a “big coyote.” Just remember aim for the guts.

I don’t look at it as good or bad. It’s just the way it is. Just pointing out that where wolves and coyotes overlap, the coyotes tend to lose and as far north as Reef is, the coyotes lost out over a decade ago.

From a hunting and ranching perspective, I’m sure most would say an increasing wolf population is going to be much worse for cattle and deer. Coyotes are hard on fawns, but generally have only a minor impact on healthy adult animals. A good cow at least has a chance of defending her calf from a coyote. Wolves on the other hand are much harder to deal with and rack up a bigger toll on both deer and cattle.

IMO when it comes to wolves, the genie isn’t going back in the bottle. There will be resident wolves in the northern metro suburbs by 2025 would be my prediction.

I don’t know if this is a good thing or not but canines are very territorial. Wolves won’t tolerate coyotes and coyotes won’t tolerate fox. But wolves will tolerate fox so there has been an uptick in fox populations where wolves preside. Check out this video of wolves taking out a coyote that decided to have one last bite of their kill.

I tend to see all three on the trail cams. We have more open country on the north half of the neighborhood and wooded on the south. The yotes seem to spend more time in the open areas and the wolves more time in the wooded areas. I’d bet if it was more wooded the coyotes would have been pushed out. I have to think the fox are harder on birds (turkeys, grouse, etc.). We did seem to have a good hatch of grouse this year. Best in 4-years.

Grey Fox can climb trees and have no problem finding safety in them. When the coyotes are being hard on fox we see more greys than reds but when wolves are in the mix we see more reds.

Coyotes near the cabin have been scarce the last few years but wolves are common as are the foxes. I’d love a full mount of a big grey but can’t quite pull the trigger on one. Beautiful animals.

Still learning the settings. I had it set to 15s fixed video before but updated it to dynamic so it can be longer during the day if they stay in frame. Will still be 15s at night, if I’m understanding it right. Also lowered my trigger interval to get more pictures.

The problem with this spot is the tree is very small and sways in the wind but I got some interesting things so I left it there and will just hope the new settings don’t go too crazy. There was only one day when the wind triggered it a lot.

I also just put out a second one that covers a good sized clearing right on the edge of some swampy woods, I think that one might get some good catches.
