Is the river really cresting already?

I’ve been watching the flow go up, and up, and up, and up. Took a look at the flows on the upper dams this morning – above P7 and it looks like its cresting at P4.

We still have last weeks snow up north. Around 10 inches in some areas. P4 could get a bit of a rise yet.

You’re graph makes it look like it’s flooding down that way Randy!

Our banks are full but at least 5 feet from flooding. I’m amazed at how many emails and phone calls are coming in wanted to know how bad the flood is!

Here is the flow at P7.

I like a little current, but over 100K is a bit rough on the trolling motor batteries.
For me, under 30K is like a lake and the fish roam/scatter and will be almost anywhere.

My absolute favorite is 40’s x 40’s = 40+K @ 40+ degrees. Bust out the cranks and put away all those dainty little girly jigs. Pigs are usually feeding hard at night.

Over 70K, the eyes seem to move off the sand / rock and relate to seams on closing dams.

Over 90K, calm pockets along the shore

Over 100K – Most guys shy away and you get most of the river to yourself. Or at least fishing in the woods.

So Randy, what’s your go to tactic for fishing in the woods @90k?

#1 – Be very careful on hooksets. Don’t want to drive a hook home into a limb…or break a rod

#2 – Pitch Current breaks – Pic is pitching a lipless gizzard shad to a seam along the trees

Hope so because I am heading down there on friday.

…We need to have the water stay up in order to have a good spawn. An then stay up some more for the eggs to hatch an the fry to have a safe place. Etc. Etc. High water from now thru may is GOOD WATER for the EYES.!! …. rrr

Ok, for our smartazzes @sjh1962 & @riverratrandy …I meant most knowledgeable.

What size jig do you use to pitch dynamite? Color preference? No matter what I try, seems all we make is turtle food out of the dam sheepshead. jester

River at Trempealeau is at minor flood, most of the landings are unusable.Plus a major amount of debris coming down.Another 12″ and the road to the lakes will be underwater in spots.
Finding a clean current seam is impossible, plus who knows with this winter storm coming this way.

Like Randolf says, not only is it great for the spawn but it’s the best scenario for catching (and releasing) the true pig of a walleye that some people fish all their life for.

Replicas are clearly a better choice over skin mounts.

Take lots of pictures from all angles. it helps to have a tape measure in the photo. Video is even better.

I’m sorry, back to the regularly scheduled post…

We have near perfect fishing conditions on P4 right now. Someone needs to remind the fish of this daily though…
