Is the MX2025 prone to spearing waves?

    Hi Guys,

Was reading a post over at WC and some guy was implying that the mx2025 might be prone to spearing waves. I’m very confident that the MX2025 can handle big water based on the feedback provided for a previous thread, but was curious what your thoughts were on this.

    thanks,
    mike

I bought my MX-2015 on March 8th this past spring.
I use it to fish salmon on Lake Michigan as well as to guide for walleyes on Lake Wisconsin. As of today, I’ve never even come close to spearing a wave.
I also don’t really get the feeling while running it out on Lake Michigan that spearing a wave is something I need to be concerned with.

Just to be fair, I would never consider myself a motor head. I don’t need to be the first person to get to a spot but at the same time, with the MX-2025, I probably won’t be the last one there either.

With advancements in props spearing a wave in a MX 2025 will most likely result in the drivers fault. Pair you MX2025 with a Saltwater II 19P and you will be able to keep the bow high at very low speeds. I believe in the 12-13mph range is minimum to keep on plane with plenty of bow lift. I am assuming you are putting a Yamaha 300hp? I do know that Joel(post above) is running a 200 on his MX2025, so regardless of the motor size spearing waves in rough water can be resolved with the right prop no matter what motor you decide and proper driving. Have fun, that is one heck of a fun boat to fish out of and drive!

Just to be clear, any boat can spear a wave. I believe one of the two competing theories on how the Edmund Fitzgerald sank is that she speared a wave and water rushed in through improperly secured deck hatches. So if a 728′ ocean going vessel can spear a wave… you get the point.

Is it “prone” to spearing? Absolutely not. I’ve had my MX 2025 out on Superior in some scary-big water this summer and never took water over the bow. Can it happen? Absolutely. But like Cal stated, it would take some driver error to make it happen.

I’m was leaning that way, however, when James posted the news that the 25″ would be available on the VMAX SHO 250, i was intrigued… and still am. In Canada there’s a 3000$ difference between those engines and if i understand correctly, the SHO 250 is essentially a 275HP engine, right? If so, then 25HP is not worth 3K for me…. thoughts?

Very good point and it’s the “prone-ness” that i was curious about. thanks for your answer.

The price difference between the SHO and Off-shore has to do with digital throttle vs. traditional cable throttle. SHO is a cable whereas the Off-Shore is all digital throttle therefore is more expensive. That is where the 3k is coming from.
A guy driving a digital throttle has much more quicker response when driving vs. cable, which in big water can make some getting used too in either motors, if its different that what you currently have.

That’s a great point Calvin (cable vs. digital throttle being the cost difference). The cost spread between the F250 and F300 is ~1500$CA and the cost difference between the F250 and the VF250 is ~1800$CA. So, although the mechanical throttle is part of the reason for the lower cost on the VMAX, the lower hp still plays a part. Having said that, i would surely pay 1500$ to max out the boat vs. not maxing it out.

Maybe it’s me, but i couldn’t find a foot-controlled throttle for the digital F300… am i missing something? I’m pretty biased on the foot-control because i use it today and would have it hard time going back. So, if that’s the case, then the VMAX is becoming a clearer choice for me.

Also did some research on when\if the VF300 would be coming to North America and couldn’t find anything… do you have any thoughts as to whether or not it will be coming here?
