Is it time to stop watching the NFL…………

The hits that I have seen flagged all are breaking the new rules around lifting a quarterback and driving them to the ground with your weight on them (look at that aspect of the Mathews hits and he does it everytime)…is it a weak rule open to alot of interpretation? absolutely! but they are trying to save the health of the QB’s so we don’t have every team starting scrub inferior backups towards the end of the season and playoffs…

It took the NHL several seasons to “mostly” eliminate the clutching & grabbing of players with/without the puck. I remember the first season with the new rules and yelling at the tv because of all the weak penalties called. BUT the back 1/2 of that year got alot better as players got more and more used to it and now several seasons later we have a faster more skilled game because of it…

What videos are you watching Joe? Even the TV announcers say Matthews didn’t lift the qb last week or this week. Momentum, weight, and gravity take over and that is how you tackle.

Someone else said Matthews is a career cheap shot player. That’s funny. I think Sunday the announcers said he had 4 roughing the passer penalties in the 9 previous years.

    Watch Horseface & Moron’s description here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABdfj0vefQA

I should have been more specific, He lifted Cousins and put his full body weight on Smith…the new rule specifically calls out both of those issues into focus and tell the players they will call it everytime…The QB’s sell the league and they are completely vulnerable (standing still or worse feet planted while throwing) I think Clay would have a change of heart if he only weighed 200 lbs and had guys weighing 320-340 taking running shots at him standing still…

Erin Rodgers & the Packers share most of the blame for the new rule as they complained so much to the league last year when Barr destroyed Erin…but all QB’s probably went to Goodell and told him change the rules or expect crappy TV ratings when 3rd string QB’s meet in the playoffs and nobody cares to watch…

I like my NHL Clutch & Grab comparison…NFL players will get used to this and adjust, this is just a rough learning period we’re going through…

You must be from Minnesota, you obviously have drank the purple koolaid. If you believe that last years injury to Rodgers directly leads to this new rule. What a tool.

SKOL Vikings! and you seriously don’t think Erin’s injury led to the new rule?!? now that’s funny!

wait until he gets hit again and the noodle ligaments in his knee give out and it’s Kizer time…we’ll hear a different tune then…

Almost unwatchable with the flags being thrown after every play, too much money, too many lawyers deciding what “Intent” means, too much social activism bs..too nice outside to waste my time..the vikes are who they are..even with a good QB..kinda interested to see what the new league is about though, screw the NFL.

I’d be more worried about your Offensive line and Cousins than I would another team and player you obviously dis-like.

    Skol Vikings… That’s also funny

Nobody seemed to complain before it got called on their team. do i believe the league should change it? yes i do. But the amount of people who are freaking out about matthews getting called is crazy. they released the rule months ago. It may be soft yes but if you are a defensive end in the league you have to understand the new rule and abide by it. Thats just the way it is

I might add that you Queenies might want to go shake the team owner’s hands for changing, or rather making a point of emphasis, the roughing the passer rule. Had it not been in place the Queenies would be 1-2-0 Skol!

What an article you linked for us to view to_setter thanks for posting it. There is a lot to process from that article.

What this brings up for me is what we maybe wittnessing with Evereson Griffen.I don’t mean to bring this up as a teaching point or anything else other than I genuinely am concerned for his well being and with gods grace I will be shown the suspicion of head injury are unfounded and in short time he becomes himself from what ever is effecting him, head injury or something else either way .

I think the injury thing is what gets overlooked a lot in this. Don’t get me wrong, these rules make EVERYONE want to pull there hair out. Even QB’s are starting to comment that these rules are hard to follow. They’re also inconsistantly enforced in that the QB’s are very protected but any other ball carrier won’t get those calls typically. It takes a lot of fun away because on almost every sack or big play, you have to hold your breath until you know there’s no flags on the field.

But, the NFL is in a tough spot right now. There’s former players and the families of players suing the NFL all the time. So much so that they probably feel they have to do something. I compare it to my workplace, which is probably similar to many of you. We have to maintain 3 points of contact when ascending any stairs. We have to wear gloves to carry anything. We cannot even use personal pocket knives; at the most we’re allowed to use box cutters, and then only if we have cut-resistant gloves on. Why do these rules exist? Because throughout history plenty of people who’ve gotten hurt at work have found an eager lawer and claimed it’s the employers fault. So to prevent future lawsuits and bad press, companies put extremely restrictive safety rules in place. In that context, I sort of understand what the NFL is doing.

It still sucks, and it still makes it frustrating to watch.

Why do people think that someone held a gun to these guys heads and forced them to play a full contact sport for a living?

Wait, running into another human at full speed every week is bad for my health? (shocked face)… the pay off is millions of dollars and you get to play a game for a living and hopefully retire early and hopefully healthy but the risk should be pretty obvious.

How many professional athletes do you know personally? Why don’t you read the article?

Those of us who do know full well that the money they make today doesn’t make them rich tomorrow. You seem to be under the impression that all professional athletes make enough in their career to make them rich for a lifetime. That’s true for very very few. The reality is that most professional athletes only play at the top level for less than 7-10 years and that they need to hold off taking their pension for 20-30 years. At that point the cost of living has increased by 50%+.

Fake news. It’s all staged to make you guys spend your $ and watch it. Also debate it and generate them more $.

The game will eventually go the way of the dodo bird through attrition. Many people know better now and are keeping their kids out of the game. Met a friend for lunch today and he mentioned their (south metro) middle school used to have 4 football teams. Now they have one team.

Eventually they will be combining schools to have enough kids to form a team.
Sure the south will still hang on to their traditions longer but the pool of talented players will start to shrink.

Well you and I and our kids will be dead by then. When your stars are coming from the ghetto’s of our nation where flipping burgers for $9 a hour is the norm there will always be a talent pool. When colleges will consistently turn a blind eye to grades, morals and criminals in the name of winning games there will always be a talent pool. When the spectators think of the players as Roman Gladiators and only want blood and violence there will always be a need for the game. They only need to come up with between 1800 & 2000 players a year to populate their rosters. At a average of nearly 1 million a year people will line up for that check for years to come.

Remember it wasn’t the violence that killed boxing, it was the criminals that owned it. There will always be a blood-thirst for violent sports, how else could you explain MMA?

Matthews has always taken cheap shots. Like the rule or not, this was a textbook violation and penalty.

Joe–You’re wrong. If you watch the video Cousins feet are off the ground before Matthews hits him.
The Smith tackle he did land with his body weight on him but he did not drive Smith into the ground.
Also since we have different opinions on this, what are your thoughts on the sack of Rodgers where the Washington player throws Rodgers to the ground on his head?
    No call??

The only way I’d come back to watching the nfl is if they went full contact. No refs needed. Boy, I’d really watch the packer games just to see their princess in tears.

The NFL is literally using the Mathews hit on Cousins to teach the rule – http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000963544/article/nfl-to-use-clay-matthews-penalty-in-teaching-video

I tried to grab a screen-grab where Clay lifts Kirk’s leg and drives him down into the ground…

Like it or not, the rule is in place to save the health of the QB’s to then unsure that TV ratings stay high because fans want to watch the elite players play, not a 3rd string guy who’s only playing because every other QB is hurt…

Who wants to watch the next Vikings game with Kizer vs Siemian at the helm?
