In the new age softness of IDO are we allowed to disuss the school shooting in Wisconsin today?

Thought and prayers to the affected families and law enforcement and responders.

I sure wish this site could just be about fishing and hunting, and not all the other crap. Plenty of other sites for that stuff.

It’s not a “softness”, but rather a low tolerance for what often turns into word vomit and name calling. An unproductive thread could get the boot even if it’s not about a controversial topic.

Daughter just called me. She was at the hospital for my grandson’s quarterly breathing test when the gates of hell opened up. They just got done and was walking to the ramp to get in their car when the ambulances and other responders were pulling in.

My niece just bought a home nearly next to the school. She’s a teacher at a different school and the family joke has been she needs to change schools so she would have a 1 minute walk to work.

These shootings just keep getting closer and closer. No one is immune and you can’t stop a lone wolf type attack. Just heard the family of the shooter is cooperating an helping LE. Its just so tragic to everyone affected by these bawling

3 dead, including the shooter. 1 teacher and 1 teenager are the victims. Shooter was a teenager also. 6 wounded, 2 life threatening. No motive yet at this time.

Randy I’m glad to hear your family is okay.

Thoughts and prayers to all involved, and I hope one day these events can stop all together.

A mental health issue combined with the copy cats is never a good thing.

When I was a kid it was bombings all over the news. One guy after another, copying the next. Government buildings, the Twin Towers, Kazinski, Olympics, etc. One whack job after the next repeating whatever made headlines.

I’d give anything to be able to go back in time and stop the first mass school shooting if it would be able to curb what’s happened since.

New age of softness? That’s laughable, and we all know that’s not true. It’s a matter of adults proving time and time again they can’t conduct themselves like adults.

I’m really beginning to think it’s something in the food that we’re feeding these kids, or just poor parenting that make them go off the rails, most of us grew up with guns and never thought once about shooting anyone,

Holy crap Randy that is hitting a little too close to home! This really sucks as they all do. I just wish these kids would get the help they need instead of resorting to stuff like this

Ya, this one is in the back yard so to speak. Neither Lindsey or my niece were in danger, it’s just a moment or wow, that’s close.

CM, it’s not the kids getting help as if help is readily available, it’s if help is available for these kids at all. I haven’t shared much about Olivia. Many here have watched my daughters grow up having an amazing childhood. As Olivia hit high school- 8th – 10 grade, we saw the change. Withdrawals from friends, uncontrollably bouts of anxiety and depression. We seeked help, and she was made a test animal. Total BS how she got put on poop drugs that Fn doctors had no clue on what they would do. More than 10 years of let’s see what this will do. Until you’ve held your crying child in your arms holding on for dear life with absolutely no one out there than can help you, you just don’t know how hard it is. I’ve begged, I’ve pleaded, I’ve spent a fortune and nothing, nadda, not a dam thing.

All I can say about these shootings is I have a hard time with the parents. Many are in denial and don’t realize how serious of a situation they may have. Love isn’t being passive. You can hate the situation, but get off your dead beat ass and do everything you can to help your child and protect the safety of others. I’m losing it, have a good night

Randy nailed the Issue on the head. Often getting those around you who are struggling with mental illness the help they need is not as easy as some think. I’m not really sure what the cause of the MUCH higher rate of it in teens these days, but I truly believe its has far more to do with something environmental than biological.

I recall you, Dutch, commenting on a similar issue, that we shouldn’t acknowledge the shooter in any way shape or form and I was in full agreement with that suggestion. I think mass shootings should be added to the political posting and religion posting category and not even brought to light here out of respect for those who were so innocently taken.

For those of you who are parents:

I’ve worked closely with kids as a high school coach and in schools at various points of my career. Without a doubt the best thing you can do with your children is get them OFF of their phones/devices. There is NO reason a child needs a smartphone before they are in high school (if even then). Social media outlets + the addictive design of games, movies, snapchat, facebook, instagram, blah blah all alter the fragile growing minds of our youth. I read a study the other day that was based on the premise that 90% of negative things an adolescent learns and engages in derive from these programs – mainly through phones. The only thing schools have to do with it is that they are the ONLY place all these young people are physically present together. Most of the crap kids endure happens from the devices they hold in their hands and not during the hours of 8:00am-3:00pm. Unfortunately schools have just become the physical outlet for violence and rage built up from this outside BS or bullying that goes on outside their walls.

Then to compound issues, parents pile on to the schools and expect them to somehow stop all of these things that fall into their laps. It creates a lose lose situation where one side says schools need to do MORE to stop these things (access to mental health professionals, teach teamwork, combat bullying, etc)……while the other side is constantly critical of schools for doing anything more than “Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic” and accusing schools of “indoctrinating” kids.

Randy – Godbless your family members who work in education. There are just not many people going into that line of work anymore…when it is probably more crucial to society than ever before.

I don’t think ignoring the story will make the issue go away anymore than not talking about war will end all wars. You are correct I don’t want the shooters identified or glorified.

There is a currant thread on MuskieFirst that their forum may close up shop due to lack of participation. There are almost no new posts on Walleye Central daily. Both sites streamlined the topics to fishing, they will soon be gone and I’m afraid IDO will soon follow.

It seems a lot of the people who oppose certain threads only post in those threads. Maybe all the sideline guys should post a topic once in a while to keep interest up. Glenn said it….the most heavily visited topics have nothing to do with fishing.

Maybe we need filter buttons when we go on forums. Fishing only, hunting only, and EVERYTHING

MuskieFirst has what they call the “basement”. It’s a seperate area where about anything goes within limits. If you want to discuss politics that don’t pertain to Muskie fishing thats where you have to go. The Trump / Biden fight is still going on there even today. It’s quite comical but it affords anybody who wants voice an opinion a place to go. It’s not for the faint of heart and it lets the main forums stay pretty clean. Those who choose to stay away from those topics can. IDO doesn’t have that….either a place to go or those who can stay away from those topics.

Same old same old. Some people prefer that post not be allowed on this site rather than just passing it by and not getting involved. Once again, I don’t want to make a decision for myself to avoid something that doesn’t interest me, I’d rather someone else made the decision so I don’t have to. Dutchboy was correct, if this site was only for fishing and hunting related topics a large # of the members these day would have left. I prefer to get and give info. to others much like myself and the outdoor community are those people. That said I realize there is far more going on in the world around us and simply avoiding reading about it will not make it go away. Nothing wrong with discussion. Some people simply need to learn how to behave and not make or take things personal.

Careful kid, you’ll shoot your eye out jester jester jester

My thoughts on off topics. I respect the few that only want a strict fish/hunt – outdoors site. Likewise I respect those that want to go way off into the gutter. After nearly 4 decades of being a resource for people in all aspects of the outdoors, I get bored with it. If anyone realized how many hours I have spent on the phone explaining how to pitch a blade bait, you’ld think I would be the next to be criminally insane. The off topic discussions are what makes us more real. Humans with logical and very illogical thinking. It helps to blow some steam, complain about the things we don’t directly control, and ruffle a few feathers. It also gives a chance to laugh and find humor in others’ accomplishments and disasters. In my aging mind, I’ve come to realize that all the pleasures I have in life arrive from how tranquil disconnect from a crazed society I live amongst.

So often I see topics I cant stomach, like modern day foolsball, sport figures that think they are god’s gift to mankind, and so on. I know if I get started on that, I don’t let off so I avoid them. But in so many other aspects, we gain so many life experiences that talking about things or sharing can actually help others outside of just fishing and hunting.
I have discontinued using all but about 2 forums anymore. I come back here regularly even though the site is only up until????? and I go on Trapperman. Both are moderated well and most topics are not allowed to derail very far. Regardless, I do enjoy contributing to more than just fish/hunt. If those restraints were in place – goodbye
