Drove thru state 2 weeks ago and got a picture of my wife’s vehicle going 73 in a 60. Doesn’t show and can’t tell who’s driving. $65 ticket not the end of the world but don’t they have to prove who was driving at that time?

Depends on the state. I wish MN would change and bring back red light cameras.

So was your car stolen? Did you report it stolen?

I wish MN would change and bring back red light

Be careful what you wish for. Chicago has red light cameras. They set the cameras to trigger tickets if you enter the intersection on yellow.

I don’t understand why MN went away from the red light cameras. I thought the reason was because the driver can’t be identified. If that’s the reason, why are parking tickets legal?

Sometimes I go on a yellow that changes to red part way through and the person behind me goes too. shock

I’m sure both you and your wife know who was driving. Lock her up. 😄👍

It’s my understanding that moving violations are issued to the driver and parking violations are issued to the registered vehicle owner. Since a speeding ticket is a moving violation it would be interesting to see how they issued the ticket.

There are some owner responsibility laws in some states..plate number is all that is needed and owner is cited..usually no points assessed. Red light cameras, toll booths, passing school bus if driver cannot be identified..those are some examples..

You’re good as long as it is yellow for any length of time. In MN at least.

I don’t understand why MN went away from the red light cameras.

I recall there being a law in MN stating something like automated systems cannot be used for law enforcement.

Ha this reminds of a great story mrgreen

One day my boss called me into his office and handed me a speeding ticket issued from the state of Iowa to my work truck….laughing his ass off at me the entire time )

I looked at the date, it was from a couple weeks prior.

I told him that I wasn’t in Iowa that week, let alone that day.

He said “Well if you weren’t in your work truck in Iowa that day who the hell was?!?”

….I began smiling and laughing back.

Then it clicked with him, a couple weeks prior his work truck was in the shop and HE himself borrowed my pickup to look at a job down there jester jester jester

I got one going through Cedar Rapids years ago…. Mine was more costly though :(. I was told as already said…. They ticket owner and so be it. Hard to fight it from WI. Another good reason for me not to visit Iowa again.

We got one in 2011 or so from cedar rapids, on a car we didn’t own anymore. Traded about 3 or 4 months before the camera date, so I called the number on the ticket and explained. She told me it was up to me to prove it because current MN records showed us as the owners, they would pursue us in court. I said MN has all the records and did nothing else. Never heard from them again

About 15 years ago I had a warrant for my arrest from a speeding ticket Iowa claimed I didn’t pay. Took a few weeks of me going back and forth with the bank and county. Turns out they put the check I mailed towards a guy with a similar name. smash

My mother who was 92 received a citation in the mail from a city in central Ia for a speeding violation taken by camera. She had sold her car over a year prior, had never been to that area and the car in the photo was white, whereas her former car was navy blue. The camera apparently only got a partial license number close to what moms had been so they tried to charge her. You’d have thought with license and registration canceled and plates turned in that couldn’t have happened but it did. Guy just laughed and said he’d take care of it when I explained it was impossible it was her.

I just got back from driving a work truck to California. Sounds like I have about two weeks before my boss calls me into his office. Hopefully I didn’t get captured by a camera.

Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Your insurance rates won’t go up as they can’t prove who was driving the vehicle. I personally would throw the ticket in the dumpster and see if they come after you. Huge controversy now as to whether Cedar Rapids can have the tickets deducted from your tax refund or if the city can have a collection agency come after you. To be brutally honest it is just a cash grab by Cedar Rapids to catch out of town and/or out of state people. I am assuming the ticket was issued on I380 at the S curve that goes over the river.

Here’s a novel idea, just obey the speed limit, problem solved.

Thanks to Homeland Security having all this information on a data base shared with all states, if you don’t pay your fine to another state MN can refuse to renew you license or registration until you pay the fine. My wife worked for a Registrars office and it happened a lot.

I really don’t get your point. You, or “your vehicle” was going 13 over the speed limit and your point is what?

Maybe claim you were both driving at the time and only get 6.5 over each; seems like a fair trade.

This is coming from a Nebraskan, by the way.

The Cedar Rapids cameras are set at 12 mph+ over the speed limit. They give a pretty big buffer before issuing a ticket. If they were set at 5 mph over I would have an issue but at 12+ I think they are being reasonable. Here are the latest statistics for the CR cameras – https://www.cedar-rapids.org/2021-05%20ATE%20Monthly%20Update.pdf

Over 1/4 of those ticketed are from CR and OVER 1/3 are from CR/Linn County.

The part I have an issue with is that there are two cameras on both the north and south bound sections and you could be issued two tickets on a single pass through town. If you were pulled over by a actual officer, most people would then slow down and not receive a second ticket.

I do not have an issue with the red light cameras – I have seen to many idiots blow through red lights and nearly hit someone. If the camera prevents one serious accident, it is worth it.

The tickets are considered a civil penalty vs a moving violation (which would go against you driving record) at least in part because they do not capture a photo of the driver. Not sure if they still have it, but at one time CR also had a Jeep they would park along the side of the road. The Jeep had the ability to get a picture of the driver.

You posted in the wrong thread. I think you meant to post this in the “IS THERE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT IN THE TWIN CITIES?” thread…..
