Just looking on opinions on which you would purchase for in the wheelhouse. I know a lot of people have both. Looking for opinions on ease of use, re-opening of holes etc. Any info very much appreciated. Looking for 8″ option only

love my Kdrill with the Milwaukee fuel 18 drill. FYI. I also have a Jiffy pro 4 propane and it received very little use this past winter based on the same requirements you posted

Love my ION X, and can see where the reverse function would work well in a wheelhouse pushing the slush back down

I have used both in a house. The Ion doesn’t seem to throw nearly the amount of chips the Kdrill does. If you consistently open old holes, I could see the Kdrill bit working better for you, however. If you also tend to hole hop and use the auger outside a lot, I would go for a Kdrill over the Ion. The Ion is fast, smooth and doesn’t throw as many chips, but it’s quite a bit heavier. Both obviously have reverse, which is great in a wheelhouse once you get 20″+ of ice.

I don’t own either but have used both many times. If it were my choice I would choose the Ion. The only thing I really like the kdrill for is running and gunning for panfish. It definitely excels in that scenario. Everything else, I world go with the ion. Was amazed at how easy it cuts holes. Very little torque and very quiet.

Why not run the kdrill on the ion with an adapter….best of both worlds

thinking about doing just this how much better does the k drill than the ion bit . is it enoughto justify the extra cost

Can a guy put the new ion x battery in a older ion auger?

Im not a fan of the Big cast head on the X. It ices up much faster than the original Ion bit even with the new coating they put on it. The original bit also reverse flushes better.
That sait cher are some tricks that can be used get better results from the X bit.

They both work very good. the really biggest advantage of the kdrill with a fuel is the weight. Makes a nice light outfit. very easy to handle.

I just bought a kdrill and man. I will never own another auger. That thing is just slick. My buddies all looked at me crazy when I showed up with my little “plastic” auger and drill. Cuts through ice faster, at a like a quarter of the weight. I have a smaller cheaper DeWalt 20v and it works just fine. Just a warning though, the kdrill does make a lot of snow with that chipper blade. But it’s actually really awesome at reopening holes. I’ve actually re-drilled through 6 inch frozen over holes with my 8 inch kdrill. I can not say enough good things about the k drill. Probably another one of the pluses while in the wheel house, you don’t have to worry about working in close quarters with it. It’s a breeze drilling right up against walls. Sorry for the novel. Rant over

K-Drill is designed to run in the 400 to 500 rpm range to work effectivally,The Ion runs much slower.
Buy a Milwaukee MUD-Mixer, K-Drill, and find a Milwaukee battery/charger deal for 2-5ah or 9ah batteries w/charger and never look back at the whiners.

    FWIW
My Son wanted to race with me on our Jiffy Pro 4 vs. the Kdrill Milwaukee set up.
I have no need for major speed to make my ice fishing experience a quality time…
However, my Kdrill beat my Jiffy Pro 4 by about 4-5 seconds. Both augers where sharpened identically.
Just sayin. Me as the old man likes the lighter weight, my son as the young buck can haul around the Jiffy and we are both happy.
    Good luck in your decision!

Have you used it with the MUD mixer?

Yes. It’s embarrassing to go fishing. Usually I have all 5 holes drilled before the gas auger guys can get their machines running.
5 years I had the Milwaukee 750″# then the 1200″# units with my own adapters and ClamPlates.
The MudMixer is easier to handle and lighter with more power than you need.
“NO you can’t borrow it”. I learned long ago the only way my auger gets screwed up is to let someone borrow it.
I keep 1 #2704/ClamPlate combo as a backup but I think it’s going to get set up with a old Mora just for the Pilgrims.

I have had both the Ion and Ion X and I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I have never had the drill setup but I know a lot of guys seem to like it. I run the X currently and I don’t think I will ever own a different auger. I have two batteries, but have never run out of the first one and I like to punch a lot of holes. I am from Fargo but now live in Michigan, and I think it would be smart to have two batteries if you like to punch a lot of holes and live in North Dakota, Minnesota, or Wisconsin, but it’s definitely not necessary in Michigan even with punching a lot of holes. I have used the Ions quite a bit so let me know if you have any questions!
