Picked one up two weeks ago. So far very impressed. Compared to my gas auger it’s faster. Perfect for spearing with no chance of gas dripping in the hole. Will need an extension for sure though much shorter than a gas auger.

    I bought a Univers-all extension and adapter for mine. I run a 8” K-Drill on my gen1 ION

I’ve yet to buy either, but have had opportunity to play with the ION and Strikemaster 40V.
I’m only 5’9″ on a good day, and I have to say that I kind of liked that the ION was a little shorter. My gas auger is pretty light, but tall enough that I have to carry it up at chin height when popping a lot of holes. Gets hard on the arms and shoulders, and I’m not getting any younger…the ION has me deeply interested.

Strikemaster 40V is a faster auger than the 40V ion offering, the Ion G2 is much more expensive than the 40V.
If you looking for an awesome light weight option look at the new Strikemaster 24 volt. With the new 24 Volt Strikemaster you will be able to drill 50 holes in 16 inches of ice on a single charge. The 24 volt SM weight is approximately 13 pounds, the lightest auger on the market. The 24 Volt SM drills holes at approximately the same speed as the 40v SM but half the hole count. 40v SM drills 100 holes in 16 inches on a full charge.
Both the 40 volt Strikemaster and 24 Volt Strikemaster are excellent choices especially for the overall performance and value.

I own the G2 and had the chance to use my cousin’s 24v last weekend. They are both awesome augers, can’t go wrong with either one.

Haven’t used a strikemaster electric but have only heard positives on both. I got a good deal on the ion and was told that one was better for opening old holes. For speed I can’t inagine it could be much difference between either. The ion was as fast if not faster than my gas auger. It took seconds to drill through 6” of ice. Regarding speed all the new augers are fast. The new augers having a light of a really cool feature when drilling in the dark. I should’ve went electric earlier.
