I had been throwing around the idea to pick up the ION for a few years now. Last Thursday I decided to pull the trigger. Went with the original model w/reverse. All I can say is I can’t believe it took me this long to get one!! It cut like a champ and the reverse is pretty darn nice in the hard house. Friday night was chilly and the holes started closing up a little, decided to open them up and the ION didn’t disappoint! WOW is all i can say. I think I found my new best friend!! Don’t hesitate, Go get it!! lol

original Ion owner here for 4 years now, absolutely love it! I would look for an original model and then purchase an X battery and keep your original battery as a backup if you need additional holes. I’m not a fan of the reverse feature, I’ll take the extra 10 seconds it takes me to scoop out a hole vs the added complexity of a reverse switch that could go bad resulting in a dead auger…those ice shavings eventually make their way back up the hole anyways..

How does the ion work with a 10 inch bit. I was always wondering because I was looking at getting an ion too but every once and a while when I go lake trout fishing I like to have a 10 inch hole. My plan was to just get a extra 10 inch bit and use it only then. Rest of the time I’d be using the 8 inch bit.

works fine, obviously you just get fewer holes per battery charge…

I “had” an ion 3 years ago. I was on LOTW drilling holes, there were guys using gas and propane all around me. They were drilling holes 3 to one over my ion.
Gave the ION to the SIL. Got a Jiffy propane, can you say AWESOME.

FWIW – The Guys at Adrians only run propane.

Jiffy propane weighs a lot more than an ion.

I bought my Ion dirt cheap and put my K-Drill, 8″, on it. Stock Ion Xs seem to have an icing issue around the cutting bit. Last year Strikemaster had the switch issue. Stock vs stock I’ve seen YouTube videos of Strikemaster being quicker.
