Interesting Conversation with the Mille Lacs Creel Survey guy…

We just took out our boat from the landing around noon to try another area of Lake Mille Lacs to hopefully get out of the wind more. We were approached by a MN DNR creel survey guy who asked us about our recent outing on the water. After some chit chatting about the lake’s SMB he then told us about a 26.5″ SMB he heard that was caught by a friends neighbor a couple years back. They were certain it was the state record but couldn’t weigh it because it was before the season opened.

As we fished the rest of the day we chuckled over this and wondered how this fish got that big?? Maybe the story was told so many times it grew a half an inch each time it was told. By the time it got to the creel survey guy everybody was convinced it was 26.5″. Or maybe the guy that originally caught it was convinced it was 26.5″ with a witness but they didn’t measure it.

Nonetheless, we had had some chuckles over this the rest of the afternoon trying the figure how that fish got so big.

I think the world record smallmouth was caught in Dale Hollow, TN at 27 inches and approx 12 pounds…

Okay so it’s possible a 26.5 was caught on Mille Lacs a few years ago and is now a new world record over 28 inches … But it probably got eaten by a walleye ;)

The other funny part of the conversation was when the survey guy told us “the SMB chase the Walleyes of the rock reefs” and “SMB are now outcompeting the Walleyes in every way possible”. So it couldn’t have been eaten by a Walleye.

The guy also said his buddy caught, weighed, photographed and released an 8 pound bass. My question after fishing mille lac last weekend is why would anyone waste their time with walleyes?

A kid caught an 8.3# smallmouth off the dock at Timber Trail last year, his mom made him let it go. I saw one come up after my bait right at the boat a few months ago that could have easily been 25″-26″. I have a feeling the current state record smallie is going to get smashed soon enough. I feel you Crawdaddy, sometimes it is tough to think about walleye when you have a chance at a monster bass!
