Insurance claim for lower unit.

So I hit a rock and blew up my lower unit. My motor is nothing special, 97 force 75. The motor is in tip top shape and runs great, always cared for. The thing will idle all day long, trolls down all day with out dying out and starts with just a bump of the ignition. But is it worth claiming this through insurance or not ? That or a scrap it out and either part it out or sell it as is for a few hundred bucks. Not sure what to do. I’ve had 1 claim my entire life and that was storm damage on a brand new truck.

Imo just pay cash and keep the marine insurance clean. Or are you filing under your homeowners? Like a zillion years ago I blew up my lower unit and for some reason I think it was my homeowners that paid somehow. I dunno, that was a long time ago.

I’m surprised you can even find a lower unit for that old of a Force, I thought they quit making those?

Call TC Outboard in Shakopee. It’s a boat motor bone yard. See if they have a LU for your motor. If not, they will pay cash for your motor.

OK, not claiming insurance was my thought as well. Just wanted to see if I was missing something from insurance, again I never use my insurance ever besides one weather incident.

I wouldnt make a claim unless it was going to be a cost that I really didnt want to part with because I like to have the cash floating around for you know pulltabs.

I wouldn’t submit a claim for a 97 Force outboard either. Not worth it.

    A newer 4-stroke outboard I definitely would.

I don’t think outboards are on homeowners policies. I know mine isn’t. It’s on my boat insurance which is its own standalone policy.

They will probabley total it since it’s so old and a Force. Then buy it back fix it and your back on the water.May not be worth much though.

My thought was along lines of motor isn’t worth much depending on deductible might get 500 to 1000 bucks if lucky. 70 through 125 I believe all had same lower unit

I do think Glenn brings up a very interesting point though. We all pay for insurance on everything we own our whole lives and try as hard as we can to not to use it jester

My biggest concern with insurance is always liability…or what I could be forced to pay someone else in the event of an accident. Replacing/repairing stuff sucks, but it’s part of life regardless of how you go about it (insurance claims or out of pocket).

I’m with the other posters and would probably just bite the bullet and hunt for a used lower unit out of pocket or just sell what’s left of the outboard for peanuts and move on.

Is there any certain reason why you wouldn’t? Insurance says they will cover it.
Is there a real reason why not to use that to my advantage? And again I’m just trying to figure out what to do that benefits me the most. When I begin to think of how much I pay them and how I never get anything back. I’m in a situation where I could use insurance what are the actual reasons why not to ?
And again my plan isn’t to use insurance I’m more so looking at pros vs cons

I guess I would contact my agent and discuss it with him/her and find out how the claim would affect your rates, and/or file the claim see what they would do monetarily and what your costs are etc.

About a year ago I cracked the cover to my 2022 Suzuki 115 while getting it ready at a landing. I called my agent he told me it would be covered. The cost to replace it was $1900 and as he said the increase to my premiums would be slight and it was not even noticeable.

I have also started a claim decided it did not make sense and cancelled it.
Remember part of the premium’s and commission your agent makes is for customer service.
