Installing Protective Carpeting in a New Alumcraft Trophy 175

Hello I just bought a brand new Alumacraft Trophy 175. My dog is a frequent passenger and my old boat was plagued with dog hair ground into the carpeting. I was thinking of getting some indoor outdoor carpeting and installing it on top of the existing carpeting via some small stainless steel screws. Has anyone done anything like this? Does it make sense to do so? Any other tips in the regard?

Maybe what you need is snap-in carpeting? I suppose you could put that in over existing carpet, though I don’t know anyone who has done that.

Installing any carpeting over existing carpeting seems like a bad idea. That’ll just prolong the drying time and result in mold or rotting wood.

This is specifically why I bought a fiberglass boat without carpeting. I don’t have any ideas for you.

This is my thinking also it will mold between the layers

Sounds like a good idea to me. I wouldnt install it though.. having it be easily removable is key. Maybe try some snap ins, or velcro? anything that would allow you to give a corner a pull and remove the top carpeting to allow for cleaning and drying

Thanks for the ideas. It sounds like a temporary, easily removed layer of carpeting, deployed only when required would work ( i.e., velcro , snaps, etc).

Every year I put a new indoor outdoor carpet layer over the carpet of my lund tyee. I just cut out the pedestal holes and make it match up perfect with the sides. Then after a catfish or sturge outing when the carpet looks nasty as hell I can just pull it out and pressure spray it and let it dry outside. Been doing it for years and carpet underneath still looks brand new.

No straps, snaps or Velcro and it doesn’t move around at all

My last 3 boats I’ve done just what Katmando said.
I also have the Trophy 175.
I get my carpets at Menard’s, they are about 3 ft X 4ft.
    indoor/ outdoor mats. about 5 or 6 bucks a piece I believe.
I am pretty anal about dirt and grim in the carpet.
I trim, or cut holes to go around the seat posts.
If things get wet, pull them out, and hang out to dry,
and you’d want to dry your boat interior too of course.

I sold my last 2 boats for TOP dollar, and each buyer said,
don’t you ever use your boat.
I’ve NEVER had a smashed crawler or minnow grind into my factory carpet.
After a 2 years or so, just replace them with new.

    Just DO IT….
