Installing 24 v trolling motor on 1997 Lund Pro V SE

I am replacing my 12 Volt Minnkota with a 24 volt Minnkota trolling motor. I had the 12 v with 2 batteries in parallel and now I will have the batteries in series. My question is my boat was prewired for the trolling motor but now not sure if I can use that wiring or have to rewire with 6 or 8 gauge wire. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Depending on your current wiring and what you new trolling motor draws at max load. If you look up your specs on your new motor for max current that will tell you the size of the wire needed. Don’t forget to fuse the positive wire too.

Welcome to IDO. First of all, can you determine what gauge wire Lund used? Second, what thrust TM are you installing?

As this chart shows, there are actually 24V TM’s that draw less amperage than 12V models.

Thank you for the response, The motor I am installing has 80#s thrust and the boat is in storage as I recently put in away for the season but I do have access to it so I will see if I can determine the wire size. It would not be hard to rewire and make sure it is all good to go in the spring, Determine if I need 6 or 8 Gauge with a breaker. Thank you more the information. Some websites were telling me the plug when switched to the orange wire put the batteries into series but I was not sure if the wires were the right size for an 80# motor.

I using 8 for my Ulterra 80#. You can’t have too heavy so 6 is even better but 8 has been fine for years of service.
