They are talking about a $85 per year “TAX” to own a electric car. The reason? Because they don’t pay a fuel tax for road repair.

So, the government comes begging the public to reduce the dependency of fossil fuel (oil). So, Tesla and Detroit develop electric cars. These cars cost a lot more then a gas burning vehicle so they collect additional sales tax. They also collect taxes of the electricity to charge those vehicles. The governments also save money with less air pollution generated. Seems these government people just don’t understand common sense. You can’t promote electric cars with one hand and pick the owners pockets with the other.

That’s why some advocate a vehicle milage tax.

There should be a tax on Prius owners that drive 10 mph under the speed limit in the left lane.

As somebody who sticks 70,000+ on his pick-up a year i would only be in favor of that if they dropped the state gas tax altogether or made it a national mileage tax and dumped the Federal gas tax. I don’t see that happening.

Are these cars or hover crafts? You use the road, you pay a tax. Unless you prefer tolls?

Here… power company finds less electricity is being used, so that is the reasoning behind the latest increase. Water usage was down in the county… rates had to go up as the utility needed the same revenue. I get it, but it still sucks, sure would be nice to use less, and save something somewhere.

Eventually we all have to pay for everything – as long as you are a income making citizen, hard to get around it. revenue needs to be collected.

Come to rural WI along the river. All these people that are riding these bicycles should also be paying some sort of road tax. They can afford these spendy bicycles and create a hazard, they also should pay an annual tax to use the roads for entertainment or transportation.

Should farm vehicles have to get an annual sticker to drive it on roads?

my take is the cost of the vehicle and its tax is a separate deal. its about the roads. like someone posted earlier. about bikes. same with grant in aide snowmobile trails, bikes and horses should be assessed a fee or trial fee like snowmobiles to help pay for maintence.

So we are all for taxing people for trying to help the environment? Can we tax the people for taking the bus and the train? They are evading the gas tax after all.

Olmsted County just threw another sales tax on, to help cover road repair. Thought that the extra $10 for tabs they added a few years ago was to take care of that! Oh no, They widen the road and made bike lanes. Some of the bridges here are over kill. Tree planters, landscaping, benches, fancy lights, plus workers to handle landscaping. Here I thought a bridge was to get to the other side. I wont talk about the flowers and sprinklers in the medians.
I also believe bicycles should have to pay a road tax and have insurance. At least pick up some of that $20,000 the city paid to paint their bike lanes!

Can we all just go back to fishing soon? My wife tells me about someone who is depressed even suicidal, I ask:Do they fish? No- See I say, people on this forum worried about texting and taxes. Not enough fishing and/or hunting going on. IMHO

Tim you can just bypass the threads. Some people do care about being taxed every time they turn around. And some people have heard every Lund vs Alumacraft / Yamaha vs Mercury / Ford vs Chevy thread there is.

I would just like to know why after last year the state had such a LARGE surplus of tax $, why the hell are they talking about raising taxes? Wasn’t it somewhere around a billion dollars?

if everyone was so concerned about the environment they would look in the long run what is going to happen to all those spent batteries.not to mention where that juice is coming from to charge it.

I also understand where you’re coming from with the tax thing. I get that trust me.

My ONLY point was how amusing it is that on one hand we are encouraged to go “green” and save oil, but when we do we aren’t spending enough money and they need to create a BS tax.

Maybe, they need to take a look at these road contractors. The cost to repair or redo these roads is ridiculous.

Interesting idea, would some of the money they pay to take the bus/train already go to similar pocketbooks? Who runs metro transit, the state?

On the other hand, 60 people on one bus is probably more efficient gas wise than 60 people driving their own cars(and it makes traffic nicer for me).

Metro Transit leaks more money then about any program going. But, metro transit is built on the same premise that they sold the electric car on. Saving the environment. So yes, enjoy your commute because you are paying for it.

How about the Amish using the roads. No plate fees or gas tax there. Some roads are widened for them, at our expense. On another note, if my dog craps in public & I don’t clean it up, I can get a fine, but their horses can crap all over the place & its ok.

Want to know something amazing? The Alaskan highway, a mere 1700 miles through rocks, mountains, forest and the coastline was built in 1942 for World War II. Construction started on March 8th 1942 and finished on September 24th of…..1942.
