OK all you Illinois river folks… I often hear people chatting about the Illinois River talk of a bait called a “golden roach.” My gut tell me they’re likely talking about a type of minnow but I’ve never really looked for clarification. So what the heck is a golden roach? I’ve never run across mention of that any place else except in connection with Illinois river talk so it must be one of those localized baits…. kinda like willowcats for us Mississippi River guys.

    Any info is appreciated.

A golden roach is a local version of a shiner, being from Illinois originally, the willow cat when first seen reminded me of mollies. Names of some bait or fish change with the geography.
