I went looking for the shallow crankbait bite the last couple days. I hit my favorite FP Lake yesterday with just my crank rod and a few lures. Two hours in the East wind and rain with a couple largemouth. First on came on a red rattletrap right at the slope of a windblown bank. It was a little guy, about 12″. The second hit a Mann’s Baby1- as it ticked the tops of the weeds. I missed it the first time, but got him on the next cast. That one went 16″.
I went to an even closer favorite local pond today, and had pretty much the same results. Two largemouth on the Baby 1-, both taken in different windblown coves in 2ft of water, right at the riprap. The first one was my first pig of the year…. 20″ and 3 3/4 lbs.
The second one was a little guy, only 16″ and 2.1 lbs.
Went to the river for an hour later this afternoon, checking out some good looking smallie spots. The water has receded a foot or so, but still pretty muddy. Spots looked good, but no fishies!
