if you had $1000 for new electronics

Would you go with humminbird 898 HD SI combo or lowrance HDS 5 gen 2 with LSS-2 for the same price on sale from cabelas? A decision I need to make in the next week, unless you have a better idea.

Not that it factors into your decision a whole lot but the gen 2 units are going away this coming year. That is why you see them on sale.

Just a FYI

Without knowing much about either unit, I would take the 8″ of screen in the 898…

Touch screen only?

Side scan will be a pain to read on a 5″ screen, unless its just a ‘get by’ while you save up for a larger unit then move the 5″ to the bow or somewhere else.

Not a fair comparison since its 2 different manufacturers but there is a world of difference looking at my 10″ bird screen side imaging versus my dads HDS7 as far as ease of interpenetrating the images, and that 2″ bigger than a 5 (and my eyes are only in their 30’s).

Is side imaging a requirement?

I would look around and buy a 998 si. There are a few places with them still in stock selling them for around 1000.

I’m a lowrance guy, but if you’ve got to chose based on that price and those are your options…. You will never regret getting a bigger screen.

Got the 999 hd si combo from reeds in onamia this morning. On sale for $1199. Can’t wait to get it on the boat and out for some fall fishing.

I have hds 5 gen 2 and love it! Sure a bigger screen would be nice but it has great detail and I like the display a lot better then birds.
