The video quality in this episode is absolutely amazing. The midday scenes of James almost look like he is sitting in a picture on the wall, that is some amazing scenery and with perch that big I would likely never come home if I made it out there.

I’m pretty sure I could see a reflector in the reflection on James’ sunglasses. maybe also some slight tone matching applied in post.

What is the food source in the lake? Why don’t/can’t we do that to one of the lakes in MN that freezes out?

The main food sources in Cascade are other Perch! They also were packed full of bloodworms and some sort of snails.

Ben you had to love them conditions for filming and time to fish also. Great job. How long does the ice hold up there. Should start slowing down at work the first part of March and I’m thinking time to meet up with a old friend from Washington state.

It is a beautiful place to visit and/or fish. I always thought South Dakota was “God’s Country” until I moved out to Idaho smile

Here’s the bad news, for this year anyway. The ice conditions just plain stink. They are waaay behind on ice production due to an unseasonably warm fall and early winter. We filmed on a sketchy 5-7″ of ice with some awful pressure ridges to navigate in multiple directions.

A typical season ice season out there runs from mid January through late February or very early March at best. Late ice can be very dangerous, it’s a reservoir in the mountains with significant snowfall. Once that snow starts to melt in late February, the current increases and water level and ice rises. An afternoon last year we had to skip snowmobiles across 30-40 yards of open water to get off the ice. That same area was froze solid that morning. The ice forms and acts similar to the ice on our lower Missouri River reservoirs.

Ok, now that I’ve written about the doom and gloom, it can be plenty safe with planning/timing and just by using your head. It’s not ice like what we’re use to here in the Midwest. You have to be a little more observant. waytogo

Have you guys ever thought of doing a show on the Iowa Great Lakes in NW Iowa? This year the fishing has been incredible on West Okoboji. Monster Gills and Limits of 9-11″ perch every time if you know what you are doing. The best part is sight fishing The clearest lake in the Midwest. Can sight fish easily in 15ft and can see bottom in 20+. Check out Kabeles Trading Post on Facebook and look at their recent pics.

    couple questions Ive always wondered.

So James calls this a bucket list trip, and mentions how you all planned a while to make it out there. Did you really only fish the one day? Do you stay more than one day? I always think, why try to make a 3o min show out of just one day of filming. Blue bird skys, what if it is better then next day? Sure those were some slabs but it seemed like you guys were waiting for an even bigger one

Good question. We filmed a show the first day and took some promotional photos while fishing the following day. With IDO’s schedule to turn a show the same week, the guys needed to get back to start chipping away at the footage. One has to remember, it’s 1500 miles and 25+ hours of driving from IDO’s headquarters. With some inclement weather (normal occurrence in the mountains) this can get substantially longer.

Yes we were hoping for a real epic giant, but to be honest, a guy could fish 100 days and not pop one. Those are truly a rare fish.

It was another great show guys!
Those were some totally awesome perch!
I hope to someday be lucky enough to make a similar trip and be
fortunate enough to catch a few perch of that size myself someday.
