Yes, larger spoons with upgraded hooks and split rings or just a circle hook. I have heard of people using the short trolling rods with great success. That’s what I use for Lake Trout, works awesome. I sanded the trigger off and use a 4000 Sienna spinning reel on it.
It’ll be perfect for sturgies too.
I read somewhere that you shouldn’t use spinning reels on upside down casting rods because rods are only designed to be bent one way. Is that a load of BS?
B-manPosts: 5801December 29, 2019 at 8:36 am #1901370Yes and no Tangler.
Every rod, whether it’s graphite or glass has a spine- the way the rod “wants” to bend.
When you build a rod it’s the first thing you check the blank for.
In my case, intentionally going against the spine has shown no I’ll effects. I think partially since but using it as a spinning rod, the blank is pulled down, as apposed to being pushed down.

I would say BS. I have talked to many rod builders and some build against the spine to get a little heaver rod action. None of them have said it was a problem. The one thing that could be a problem is hollow blanks don’t do the best in the cold and are easier to break with a heavy load on them.

I’m gonna throw my ABF on an upside-down Daiwa Triforce “shorty” rod until the replacement for my 40 incher gets shipped in to Joe’s. (not for sturgeon, just pike and maybe smaller lakers if my rod isn’t in by the 18th for trout opener).
December 30, 2019 at 2:10 pm #1901716Coworker has been fishing the Bayport and North Hudson areas for sturgeon and said that ice has been getting sketchy of late. Had to jump open water at the shoreline to get out last Friday. This is 2nd hand info so grain of salt and all

LOL, I know that’s where I’m going to on my way to Bayport to plan my statiegery.
January 1, 2020 at 5:11 pm #1902416I won’t be able to make it. On call for the FD all weekend. I’ll have to watch and be jealous. Make sure and get some pics so we can all see how it went!
January 4, 2020 at 9:34 am #1903297I’d have to imagine that 1 extra week is going to add a good amount of ice to drive out. It’s looking like some favorable temps 5 days out.

You won’t be driving out on anything but a 4wheeler or snowmobile.

What exactly are the ice conditions? Would you be willing to give me a ride out? That would be very helpful.
I see people reporting 7-9” out there right now and in 2 weeks there should be another 4-5. That’ll be enough for me.
January 4, 2020 at 11:27 am #1903327Gil,
I can give you a right out on the grizzly, but you’ll have to ride bit&$. 😜.January 4, 2020 at 1:44 pm #1903343Gil,

January 4, 2020 at 2:03 pm #1903346Where do you park your truck when you can’t park it on the ice? I’ve only been out when I could park on the ice.
uninc4709Posts: 169January 4, 2020 at 2:13 pm #1903349Currently out of bayport, one hole has about 4 inches dark ice with 4 inches white, my other hole has about 3 inches black and 4 white. Current is way stronger than usual and there’s about 5-6 feet of bad ice at shore that’s all broken. Will definitely be getting wet when I leave. Theres parking at the Bayport park.
tanglerInactivePosts: 812January 4, 2020 at 2:27 pm #1903354If going outta ferry landing in north Hudson, the entire village is an ATV route. The parking lot will likely be full, and the streets nearest by will be no parking zones at least for trailers. But if you get away from the landing a ways you can just park on the street and ride your atv/sled on village streets back to landing.
January 5, 2020 at 4:25 pm #1903682Hmmm,
We have the GTG……..we have the St. Paul Sport Show………we have the Boat Center open house. All the same weekend.I think the open house provides the safest cheapest option for me.
Have fun guys, be safe!!
January 5, 2020 at 4:33 pm #1903686Dutch,
You know there really is only one option.
See you at the GTGJanuary 5, 2020 at 4:55 pm #1903694Uh-Oh!
Guess who has a football game during the GTG next Saturday?January 5, 2020 at 4:59 pm #1903698I see people reporting 7-9” out there right now and in 2 weeks there should be another 4-5. That’ll be enough for me.
In 2 weeks, maybe…maybe not? But the GTG is next Saturday and that’s not good enough for me to drive my truck out there.
Dutch,
You know there really is only one option.
See you at the GTGWell yes and no.
The other option is having GTG at the Bungalow chewing on a walleye sandwich with a beer and watching the NFL Playoff game…who’s playing again?
January 6, 2020 at 8:04 am #1903821mmm,

What time do we want to do the potluck?January 6, 2020 at 8:23 am #1903828Are we thinking the potluck will be out on the ice, or will it be in a parking lot similar to the Pool 2 Fall Hog Hawl?

I really like that sunday breakfast and more!
January 8, 2020 at 8:15 am #1904356It’s only a couple of days away and we are finally getting some nice weather for ice again. So…I have a couple of questions to clear up:
What access point in the Bayport area do we want to meet at?
What time should we do the potluck dinner? Do we want to do the potluck on the ice or parking lot? It seems like most of the people who are going to try to come won’t be able to make it until later.

The north lot between Lakeside Park and the Beach House Marina has the most capacity. I’ll call my buddy Frank that manages the Beach house, maybe I can get the nod to park there?
Later sounds perfect!😁 I’ve intentions of making egg rolls now, easier to prepare and keep hot compared to chicken wings.
DeucesPosts: 5236January 8, 2020 at 8:35 am #1904363Definite vote for everything on ice, GTG, potluck, etc. Leave lines in with bells while activities are going.
Sure wish I saved that couch from mille lacs
DeucesPosts: 5236January 8, 2020 at 8:46 am #1904365What kind of lighting do we have for night if we were to have potluck after sunset, if not alot having the main event GTG at say 3 would seem to work. Anyone bringing a large popup to accommodate several people or we all gonna hang by the fire barrel?
I got an Eskimo popup 949, fit few fellas. No lighting but could bring a couple bundles firewood if anyone want to bring a pit
