I’m sure I can convince Bearcat to join as well.

I talked to him and he said that the date is too far out to know for sure but he is in.

“Best” is a very tricky word. I use 4/0 circle hooks with a 2 oz slip weight. I know some use less weight and treble hooks. Either way, pinching the barbs down will help release the fish faster and I can’t say never, but you’ll never lose a fish with a circle and barbless.

This is exact what I was doing. Maybe just a 1 or 1.5 oz sinker but I let the slip sinker rest right on the eye of the hook. No leader or swivel.

Agree with barbless circles as well. Can’t disagree with glow spoons and treble either, but you need to make sure and set the hook at the first sign of a bite or else she’ll have it 2’ in her gullet.

If I can make it I’ll have at least 4 capable rods of which I will share.

    Sooooo,
Gil along with the “2” in her gullet” thought, I’m thinking of that set up with a crappie style slip bobber rig to detect the nibble.

    Thoughts?

The Northwoods angling guys use one of those foam bobbers packed into a snow pile on the edge of the hole. If it falls off the snow pile you have a bite. Pretty slick. I haven’t done this for a couple years so I have yet to try it.

Honestly I’ve just rested the bait on the bottom and watched the rod tip. There’s definitely better ways but I like to do things the hard way.

I’ve caught them on ifishpros too. Come to think of it, it might even be a good method altogether.

If anyone is willing to lend me a smoker I can bring about 10# of smoked lake trout. mrgreen

I tried the same way the north woods guys did last year but I didn’t get have any hits. I have a couple of other tricks up my sleeve but I have to make sure they work before I tell people about it.

I am able to drill my own hole but if you want me to fish out of your hole I can.

I’m thinking maybe something as simple as this might work. Just stick one of these next to your hole.

    You missed the joke fishwater.
I am working on a 3rd rod that will work for sturgeon if someone wants to bring a spinning reel with 20 lb + braid on it. I can mount it on one of my extra rods for someone.

Totally expected, I’ll get it next time!

I’ve got a huge spool of 30lb metered suffix I’ll never use if that’ll help anyone.

    Cool!
I still have a rod from the canceled 2017/2018 Mille Lacs GTG (built by Big Crappie ‘vikes colors’) and a couple IDO hoodies.

I wish I could make it considering I’m building a couple of sturgeon rods right now but I have a family Christmas that weekend. I’ll have the break my ScooterJ customs in the following weekend

Never been Sturgeon fishing this sounds like fun if I can make it where exactly is this being held aka directions. What are we using for bait and how much? I have rods and reels I can use have to pick up some circle hooks …size recommended? May have a few more questions as it gets closer.

I was out of bayport Wednesday and there was some water on top, but still found 6ish inches of good ice. Lower layer of ice was starting to soften up though.

Would it be prudent to have a plan B?

Or are you guys fairly certain the ice will hold up until then.
