Sorry, that post came out wrong. I’m not mad at Steve and Lynn, there great. I little disappointed in Mother Nature. Oh Well it looks like I’ll be going with Plan “B”. Which may include a whole lotta trolling on formica flats.
I would be out if ATV’s can’t get out.

I was out on ML yesterday with a tandem axel house. The ice was in great shape! No honeycombing at all so the ice will be fine. The access will be the only question mark. Good luck boys.

Hi I think I’ll be up around Mille Lacs through the weekend I’m going to be working on my campsite. Is it still going on? I am thinking about stopping in and saying hi and having a few beers, so it starts at The Red Door around 7 o’clock? May see you there. Mike

Hi Mike- I would say the GTG is doubtful at this time, but we will be making the official decision later this week.

And it’s raining now. Not looking good for this weekend, but it’s still possible. I just spoke to Red Door and they have room for wheel houses on shore, and 4 wheelers/ATV’s are possible on the access this weekend. IF they allow them, would people still be interested in going?

Well I do not have an ATV or a UTV, but I do have an HDTV! smile
I also have the day off work Friday and the motel reservation up there for Friday and Saturday nights. I would still consider trying as Jon quotes…

Probably just walk out to the break line and fish there. Or do some serious trolling over on formica flats! toast

    -J.

As much as I was looking forward to the fishing, I think I was looking forward more so to meeting everyone and hanging out, having some friendly competitions, goofing off some, and enjoying some beverages. I also enjoy fishing the “formica flats” if that’s what it comes down to. There would/could still be the Friday and Saturday night “socials” at the Waypoint. But I could understand guys not wanting to come just for that.
    That’s my vote, I guess? ???

I think as far as the fishing, I’m out regretfully. Call me a chicken S, but I was on the lake yesterday, and I didn’t like what I saw. But if enough people are still going to meet, I’d come up Saturday evening for the festivities so long as mrs drifter can find a babysitter that night. So she can drive my a$$ home. Unless there’s somebody that doesn’t drink much in the Maple Lake/Annandale area we could ride up together. We can take my pick up, split gas. Or maybe a room? PM me if anyone is interested.

I was just offered a spot in a luxury sleeper on Red for the weekend. Why does it always seem to run that way, 50 options or nothing. chased

Twin bay said they pulled their houses to the other side of Hennepin. They will know Wed what will hold for the weekend.

My Saturday trip turned into all weekend it looks now, I’d like to see a barn burner Friday night cause then I’m off to red Saturday.

Agate Bay sent me an email that they are pulling ALL houses by today and closing the access except for ATV or snowM. (depending on the ice).

I’m thinking the north end of the lake is making a little ice this morning. Go winter! santa

I’m fishing. I’ll plan a late evening fish fry Friday; staying in one of the 3br cabins. Hopefully my buddies can commit as well. We have a couple wives unhappy with my insistence on safe ice; not my wife, not my problem. Stupid news… I have to admit, it’s been pretty darned warm out. toast If my college buddies bail, I’m bringing some small children to boss me around. tongue

If you need some adult company there might be evening poker game going in one of the other cabins. Plenty of talk about fishing to go with that. Actual fishing? Maybe not so much.

I agree with this to an extent.. Yes, as of Sunday afternoon it looked like the lake was going to survive the warmth. Still snow on the ice, banking around the house, not hardly any water on top. Then, Yesterday, I got the call from Appeldorn’s that Hard houses needed to get off “NOW”. I left work and boogied the hour drive north. I tell you what, it was VERY scary out there.. Water running into holes and cracks anywhere it could, opening up by the minute. Check out Appeldorns “BookFace” page. They posted a video of the water swirling. This was one of many, many I saw on my mile and half drive out. The access too, just about had enough of it. After what I saw yesterday and the forecast still not looking great, my ice season has ending way too early.. To each there own, but it was VERY ugly out there and that was at noon. Can’t imagine what it will look like after today’s 55 degrees…

Water on the ice is always ugly but the best thing for the ice is to get the water below it. That means flowing down any opening it can find. The temps will be dropping all week, so I can say with the utmost confidence there will be plenty of ice for fishing this weekend. I can’t believe this event is “doubtful”. Each to his own though. Everyone’s level of ice experience is different. I’m sure it’s hard to have fun if you’re scared. Good luck!

Few resorts I’ve checked with today have pulled bridges to lake until “hopefully” this weekend, including the Red Door. Hard to fish when you can’t get access. Forecast is 50 Wed, hovering at freezing most of Thursday. Red Door has pulled all houses, as most other resorts on entire lake as well. I’m no ice expert, but here are the facts.

Not a fan of atving around with water flying everywhere. What are the thoughts of the more experienced mille lacs minds think about conditions for Friday?

I got a weekend pass that will be used one way or another. Need to make other plans asap if GTG is poopooed.

Well, that’s sad news but I cannot say I’m surprised. I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I don’t want to give up on hardwater season just yet.

I’m just bummed warm weather has ruined ice season and I’m sure we’ll get snow in March or April that will ruin my turkey hunting season. flame

Im going to guess the water onto top of the ice will find its way down the cracks and holes this week. Cold temps coming will solid everything up towards end of week. Goid ice for wheelers and walking.

Bring cleats unless you want to see the ice up close.

    Guys-
Trust me when I say, no one is more disappointed that the weather didn’t cooperate for this event than me! I wanted to wait until the last minute to make the call, but with nearly every resort pulling their houses, bridges and access to the lake it just doesn’t make sense to wait any longer. Joe and Mike are right that there will be plenty of ice on the Pond this weekend, but getting onto it and once on it moving around safely just doesn’t seem likely. Add in the temp on Mille Lacs going from 52 today to a low of 13 this weekend, the ice sheet and breakers will be changing on a daily basis. So the unofficial official GTG is officially POSTPONED. We will setup another event for the open water so stay tuned, and there are still some TUCR’s waiting for their new home! I really appreciate everyone who helped make this a possibility from IDO, Will, Red Door and even EPG’s countdown (and the corresponding notices I received lol)! Thanks for your understanding and we will see you soon at the open water gtg!

    Thanks,

Both Nitti’s and Johnsons Portside posted videos on their facebook pages today expressing they wanted everyone to know that access is limited, but the perch extravaganza is a go. They’ll be posting updates regarding the changing lake access each day (until Saturday) on their facebook pages.

Yeah sounds like they moved most of the event to their parking lot due to deteriorating ice conditions.

Tough call bud. You did the right thing. EPG, there’s always next yr to try an bird dog me, lol. Merican Eagle, jamin, nahmm, fishwater, etc. I’m truly sad I didn’t get to fish with all you guys. I was looking forward to having an “old man” talk with Walleye student, and having a beer with my insurance agent Big Wurm. This really sucks but trust BW, this is the safe thing to do. This WILL happen next yr.

So since I’m headed to Texas next week for a little R and R, I really don’t do much soft water fishing, and I’m sure THE topic about one of the greatest fisheries in our state that boils my blood is rite around the corner, I think I’m gonna give the forums a rest for awhile. I will check in here and there, but until next hunting/ice season……..
    Happy trails,
    Drifter.

Cancelled our cabin for the weekend to. Was looking forward to meeting some of you guys. If you want you can look me up on pool 2 this weekend. I feel terrible for Red Door and all the other resorts up there. Sounds like a lot of reservations lost this weekend.

    Next winter.

Yeah, just another reminder that ma nature doesn’t care what our plans are. Now I just need to find something to do on Saturday while my wife is hosting a baby shower. blush Any reasonable idea will be taken into serious consideration! rotflol
