What were the reels called used on the Tuned Up dead sticks on this weeks show?

They looked like Okuma Avengers. I have been running these all season and like them. They are one of the least expensive reels on the market with a bait feeder system. Shimano makes a great baitfeeder (baitrunner) reel but they are in the $100-$150 range.

These reels really shine i.m.o. when paired with an Ifish Pro, first strike bite indicator or similar, as the bail is closed so the wind can’t blow line off of your spool. I have caught many Crappies, Perch and even Bluegills on this system this year.

Phil hit the nail on the head. The Okuma Avengers are fantastic when combined with the iFishPros or similar. I found mine for $38+ shipping on Amazon before Christmas.

    Great
Now I have to buy a TUC deadstick and a Okuma reel. Watching IDO and this website is getting expensive.

Love the show and this site. I sometimes watch the show with a pen and paper pad and take notes to figure out what I should buy next.

The show is educational and entertaining keep up the good work!! Glad you post them all on youtube.

I agree with Bob and Leroy…

Ordered the deadstick 2 weeks ago and bought the Okuma Avenger ABF 20 today. I have been wanting to upgrade my deadstick for a while but had never thought of a bait feeder reel. Great idea for sure.

James thanks for posting this. Great solution for someone who likes to have a dead stick in the water.

Roger that. I’ve always liked Okumas. I just bought two of them a minute ago on eBay. Next…TUCR deadsticks!
    Great show and tips.

    James,

I see there’s a B series of that reel too that looks like it has some upgrades. Is there a reason you went with the other model, or were you just trying it out and wanted a cheaper model?

How big is this reel compared to a 500 series shimano?

The Okuma is at the top. 500 Sedona is on the bottom. Most of the size difference is to the rear where the bait runner mechanism is located.

TUCR may as well stock these reels and the carbon drag washer kits…. talk about a perfect dead stick combo!

James. Just purchased this reel gonna use on the big pond this weekend. What line would you suggest for a deadstick with this batifeeder system? Thanks
Keep up the good work. Love the show

I’d recommend a 6 – 8 lb mono or flouro – basically whatever you’re comfortable with. I would steer clear of a braid for this particular application. I have mine spooled with 6 and 8 lb Sufix Castable Invisiline and I’ve been very happy with it.

You guys suck! At least that’s what my pocket book is telling me.

Just figured out what a “bait feeder” reel does. I’ve been wanting something like this for my Arctic Warrior and my other deadstick setup. Trouble is I didn’t know such a product existed until right now.

Now, just a reel replacement or am I calling the guys at Thorne/TUCR too? jester

One more question, anyone know the name of the product with the flag in the pic above? I saw it advertised on Midwest Outdoors last weekend but can’t remember the name.

Best show on TV James! The fam knows to leave me alone while you and the boys are on! Yes, I have taken notes during shows, but I primarily look for your tips on where to fish in relation to the surrounding structure.

    Thanks again James and IDO!

Any recommendations for size to use on a pike rod with my iFish pro?

    Thinking about getting the 30.

I just ordered the 40 and it’s comparable in size to a Shimano 2500
