What a wonderful March of fishing!! We ended our borderland version of “March Madness” Saddling up the big “Donks” yesterday. Those bigger crappies opened that window and our rods were loaded up. Our Biggest crappie of the day measured 14 inches on the button with a nice mix of 12.5-13 inchers!!
Great fishing with Gary and Glenn!! Look forward to next year boys!!
We’ve found these big slabs holding different than I’ve experienced in the past. The Bigger pigs were found “Snout Down” in the mud presumably digging up larvea probably because of our late ice. Much to there suprise as they would “Mingle in the mud” a well placed bottom bounced Diamond jig tipped with spikes followed by a slight fade up the water column was obviously a bit too hard to resist. This holding pattern the bigger crappies are on makes hole searching much more difficult as the fish are not clearly visible high in the column. Anglers are forced to use the incredible powers of Marcum technology to detect slight movements on the bottom. Then when the do move to bite they are moving inches off the bottom!! YES these fish obviously know where the “Bug buffet” is located!!
Once you think you’ve got a handle on Crappie behaviors your likely to receive a knuckle curve ball that buckles your knees. Our suggestion is to dive into that pitch and hit it out of the park like these boys!! GREAT JOB MEN!!
Glenn was using the Thorne Bros noodle rod along with another stick. While both Gary and I utilized the Quiver stick. I’ve got my quiver stick laced up with a cold water 3lb mono, and I’ve been VERY happy with this combination of rod/line for efficient hook sets.
We used a variety of presentations today, but the diamond jig in the Chart/orange combinations continues to dominate the field………OR THE MUD!!
Bring on April!! I think I’ve got a little left in the tank
