Bob, Matt and I hit the ice yesterday morning about 9AM. What a difference 24 hours makes. Saturday was almost miserable, cold and with a slight easterly breeze had me thankful once again I purchased my Snosuit. We were able to scrape together a small meal of fish on Saturday.
Instead of getting out early on Sunday, we decided to the let sun rise a bit. I would guess we were on the lake by 9:30. Our first spot, which we hadn’t fished in two years, only produced one crappie that was bucket worthy. We moved to another spot that had recently put out fish, but no luck. Only marking a couple fish. At this point, Matt decided it was time to go home and keep Mama happy. Bob and I decided to try new spot.
As we pulled into this area, it looked to be a classic pre-spawn staging area for the panfish. We punched a couple holes and before you know it Bob had lost 4-5 nice fish right at the hole. So we punched a few more holes and it wasn’t long and my biggest gill of the year was in the bucket. Then a couple more keepers. About then Jason and his brother showed up. Well, we need to charge Jason big time. He fished in MY hole with BOB’S rod. But boy did he put on a clinic. He quickly had a nice meal of fish and shortly after moving to a new hole, he had a true trophy gill. I’m quite sure it’s the biggest I’ve ever personally witnessed. The fish had everything it was easily over a 1lb.
We ended our day about 4:00, sunburned like mad with two nice meals of fish. With warmer temps predicted, we won’t be getting on this lake much longer. It was “hairy” the last two days with sub freezing temps. As Bob stated, the sheet is still a strong 24 inches, but getting to it will be the challenge. Thanks for a great ending to the ice season boys!!
Sorry about the poor pics, it was tough seeing the phone in bright white conditions.
