Well I made the trip out to north east South Dakota to do a litle late ice fishing. The hopes were to hit several area lakes out there but it was soon realized that there was still several inches of snow in some areas which made travel very hard at times with a 4 wheeler.
The trip started off by meeting a buddy in Watertown where we were to pick up his 4 wheeler and trailer. Well the shed was snowed in and after getting my truck stuck and shoveling for about one hour we were finally on the road.
The first lake was Bitter. We had some good reports of big walleyes being caught on tip ups. We were able to get about half way to our spot which was about 1 mile from where the truck was parked when we started falling through the snow which was about 12-15 inches with lots of water underneath. This made it tough and the two of us walked the four wheeler to where we wanted to start. After being there for a while and popping holes it was decided that we were not on top of the fish and needed to move. So after three of so moves we ended up near the same area where we started for the evening with only a few fish to show.
The evening ended with a small run on walleyes and a few perch for the effort. It took almost one hour to walk the four wheeler back to the truck becaue the day had gotten warm and the snow melted to the point where we could not keep the four wheeler on top of the snow.
After a few at the Decoy Bar in Webster we decided that we were going to try another lake that we had gotten a tip on. We awoke in the morning and all we could see was fog. We decided that we were going out anyway and that it could not have been any worse that the previous day.
After getting to the lake we found very little snow on the ice but there was 6-8 inches of water and ice. We set up a few times and finally were found what we were looking for. LARGE JUMBO PERCH . It was not hot and heavy but we were able to pick off one or two here and there. Thanks to the Marcum cameras. We had perch and pike around us all the time but with the use of the camera we were able to keep the pesty lil guys off the line so we were ready when the big gals came through. We ended up keeping 30 jumbos between 12-14.5 inches. The girth on the jumbos was truely amazing.
Sunday night brough some colder weather and we were able to drive my truck out to our spot for Monday as the ice had refroze overnight. We fished until 2 on Monday and then called it quits.
There was about 26 inches of good solid ice out there yet and with the cold snap that was coming it looks like they will have good ice for a couple more weeks at least.
