37 Inch Pike, 2lb Test, 1 hour 15 minute battle!!

Well it finally happened yesterday. Nope……DID NOT catch the elusive 17 inch crappie that haunts my sleep, but finally tagged a big pike fishing crappies in a new spot. It has always amazed me in this particular location that I have never seen big pike. Tullibee, whitefish and crappies…..BUT NO BIG PIKE?? Doesn’t add up. WELL I watched a FREAK of a marck flash through my Marcum and then scoop up my diamond jig in which frankly I was reluctant to even set the hook on. When I pulled the trigger it was evident immediately that I was a way overmatched with my tackle. Seldom will I have customers come help in my shack, but I called out saying “BOYS…….I’ve got a big big fish!!” What was about to unfold gentleman I can honestly say was the toughest battle I’ve ever had with a fish. My little noodle rod and my “horse hair” for fishing line (2lb Mono) had hooked a very large and equally angry northern pike. We honestly fought this fish for a good hour while almost being spooled 4-5 times before we finally saw the fish. Of course the first goal was simply to identify the fish. From there we knew we had another huge challenge to bring this overpowering fish topside. Well as expected for this big pike not to simply cut the line I had that diamond jigs barely hooked on the outside of his large jaw. When the fish finally came to the hole there was simply no way to back it up to start it up the hole. In faith I handed the rod to my customer and started taking off sweatshirts. I said I am going to get wet and I don’t know if I can reach that far down the hole. I stripped down to just my bottom shirt and went shoulder deep tickling this massive pikes head, gils and TEETH. Finally I slipped my hand into the correct position and brought her topside. The girthy gal taped 37 1/4 inches and had an estimated weight of 15-16lbs.

I assure you we also landed an awesome whitefish yesterday and even though neither were our targeted fish they made for a very memorable day on the hardwater!!

Congratulations to Big Jim on the fantastic Whitefish.

We also did manage some nice crappies (are targeted fish….LOL), but they were again a bit tight lipped with the 30 below start to the morning. I suspect the 37 inch pike roaming the mud did not help the matter!!

Man do I love fishing this time of year!! CANNOT WAIT TO get back out there!!

Great story Chris. My first thought when you said you were taking your sweatshirts off was “Man I hope he has long Arms”. That should be “one” of your best fishing feats.

The pike is becoming my favorite fish to catch.

Honestly I’ve caught many bigger pike, but this one I believe was the greatest accomplishment. A little luck doesn’t hurt either

    GOT PIKE??

To even add bigger odds against landing that fish, Mitch (another guy in our party) was several yards away from Chris. While Chris was fighting this monster, Mitch also had HIS line go very very heavy for about a 20 minute fight! Yep, we thought we had 2 epic battles on our hands!! Somehow Mitch brought his jig close enough to the hole once to see his jig, but thats all he saw!! His jig! It turns out that Mitch and Chris were in the same battle with the fish and each other! The pike had run so far out that Mitch jig snagged Chris’s line and they fought against the fish and each other for almost 20 minutes…and didnt know it!! Weird enough, Mitch’s line broke and the pike was all back on Chris’s noodle rod.

It was so odd! Travis was directly between Chris and Mitch and he stayed clear of the pike’s run but he got into Mitch.

So between a noodle rod, 2 lb test, running Chris’s reel almost empty several times, getting hooked by Mitch’s jig, and an hour plus fight….the odds were not in Chris’s favor! But the pro prevailed with an awesome fish (and a really cold arm). I wish I would have learned something from that. Maybe I could have landed the monster crappie I lost at the hole! GRR!!

A fishing story I was there for and will NEVER forget!!!!

    Hey Jim!!

Glad to see you posting buddy!!

That sure was fun. I sat at home after you missed that fish and thought about it and then remembered I had seen the spots on top of the back. Surely that was a huge slab. I wouldn’t have guessed it by the fight, but I assure you those big elusive DONKS fight like crazy……FOR A CRAPPIE!!

Yes I forgot to add the part where somehow my 2lb test was hooked 40 yards away!! and somehow I still wasn’t broke off. CRAZY!! LOL!! BUT VERY FUN!!

Oh on a side note Jim…….I made that fix to my back rail on my sled last night!! Should be good for another week. Thanks for adjusting my sleds rear shocks. I think we all enjoyed that!

Hey! No prob on the fix! Easy stuff! Just wish I would have thought about it Saturday morning…lol. If we wouldn’t have been in a hurry to get rolling, I would have taken a 1/2 hr and cleaned that carb before we left too. Glad ya got the bumper/hitch straightened away!

Thanks for a great time Chris. Was an absolute blast!! We will see ya next March, if not sooner!

There is just something about sitting over an ice hole with some very big fish on some very light line.

I agree Bob!! I’m sure I must have sounded like a broken record when muttering “ARE YOU KIDDING ME……..WHAT IS THIS THING….I JUST WANT TO SEE IT!!”

About the only big fish I hate to do battle with are large eelpout. I hate it when they decide to curl up at the bottom of the ice hole. It’s one of the disaster making for light line. The other one is sturgeons when you get them up next to the hole and they decide to wrap their tail around your line. It’s something that after over an hour of fight just to get the mishap.

LOL!! I am just a kid at heart Jim! I say when you stop giggling like a school girl when you are fighting a big fish….Need to hang up the cleats!!

BTW I’m picking up another sled today on my day off. Hoping to have 4 sleds in the fleet for next year.

I might be interested in someone doing a end of the season tune up on the sleds in exchange for a trip. You know mechanics are not my strong suit!!

I’ve caught my share of big pout, but never a Sturgeon through the ice. THAT my friend would be an epic battle!!

We’ll talk soon Jim!! I like to barter for things that I need done, and sled maintenance is on the list. Nothing too big, but probably need some tune ups, greasing, carb cleaning (LIKELY). Might need new belt installation?? Then winterize for next years ice fishing season. Sounds like your pretty handy with stuff like that.

Great job on the trophy pike with 2# test.

It had to be an awesome battle as I caught a 43″ pike last year on 6# test and I thought I would lose it for sure. I saw it and thought, how am I going to get this landed.

Got lucky and it worked. Thanks to an awesome drag.

    Gotta love those big pike.
