Strikemaster Power Augers

I recently upgraded from a 8 inch 3 hp Strikemaster Lazer XL 3000 to a 8 inch 3 hp Lazer Pro. My old XL 3000 was lightning fast and could drill 4 holes in the time my buddy could drill one with his new 10 inch Jiffy . Every year I have guys asking me what kind of auger and why is it so fast.

Well to get to the point. I bought the Lazer Pro for the speed since I do a lot of searching and punch a lot of holes every time I’m out. So Saturday I put gas in the new auger and was pretty excited to test it out considering all the reviews on how fast it drilled. After the first hole I was pretty disappointed considering it was much slower than my old auger . I let it idle for a min thinking it just needed to warm up for a min, next hole same thing. I went home trying to figure out why it was so much slower being they both were 3hp and 8inch Lazer augers. I decided to try the old auger bit on the new power head. I got on the lake and first hole almost sucked me down to the ice . I’m not sure, but the new auger bits are much slower than the old XL 3000. Could it be the blade pitch or the center spike?

    Just some food for thought.

I’d bet it is the pitch. When you mate that solo head with a properly pitched auger/blade assembly…. well, you got to experience it first hand.

Give SM a call yet today. Someone will still be around and their CS is very good. Tell them you put another auger on it and it cut like a demon so you’re confident the auger bit/blades are the issue. They’ll take care of you.

I don’t think it’s a bad auger bit itself I think it’s just the new design and/or pitch on the new augers. My buddies Lazer mag is just a bit slower then my Lazer Pro with the new auger bit. I think the old design just cut faster.

I hear what you’re saying but he’s saying it is “much slower.” I’ve drilled with a lot of Solo augers from the first year prototypes to today’s augers and none of them could be described as slow in any way. My solo this year rips. And that’s with a new auger bit.

One thing’s certain, he’s got an issue that only SM can solve.

I think James has it right on the head, my Solo LAzer 2.5 HP rips through the ice. My friend has the Strikemaster LAzer with the Tecumseh motor and I out cut him easily. His is only 2 hp but I’m considerably faster and I know he has good blades.

Check the blades. I just bought strike-lite II with a 8″ lazer the day after x-mas. Didn’t cut worth a crap. If they say made in China on the top side call strikemaster 763-263-8999. Something about the pitch being wrong. They replaced mine after giving them the ser. # on them.

I just purchased a new 2.5 Solo head that I matched up with the bottom off of my blown up 224.(Thanks to James!) I tried it with some new blades(reconditioned) and the motor is begging for more bite. Could I try shimming the blades slightly to give it a bit more dig??….or should I not have put reconditioned blades on? If I put on a brand new set(4″ & 8″)should I be cautious not to get pulled right down the hole?? I know one thing…..That Solo has some get up and go!!

I run the 224 bit on my solo 3 hp and I know its beggin for more ice. The 4 blade drill doesn’t bind just before break thru its a really smooth process from start to finish. I would stock up on new blades if you plan on running the 4 blade for a while as I heard rumors of them discontinuing the 4″ blades. just a rumor
