Very Finicky Gills

I have been hammering jumbo perch on a little flowage here in NW Wisconsin. Fishing in 3-4 ft of water, the max depth in 5 ft. This tiny flowage has Huge gills and slab crappies and I can consistently see these fish swim under the hole, but they wont’t bite on anything. Plastics, grubs, shrimp, mousies, spikes. Please any advice would be great.

Downsize downsize downsize. If you look through the archives here on IDO (maybe one of the admins can help) James Holst has a video on finicky gills where he was using just the skin of a waxie, and if I recall correctly possibly only 1/2 a skin with nothing inside. Sometimes it’s fun to see how little bait these fish actually want.

That’s right- the smallest bait you’ve got, and don’t even twitch the lure. They’ll come up and sniff it, and if that sucker even flinches, they swim away. Seen it way too many times on the camera. Half a waxie, as small a jig as you can, light line, and no movement- you’ll catch ’em!! Good luck!
