Im not sure exactly what difference in price is, but price wasn’t the factor for me. I wanted a 7″ hole and could only get that with the 2.5 horse power head. Either way there great augers!

Is the reason behind the 7″ you purchased, just getting holes drilled faster & weight??

Weight is a factor, but I think most guys who drill tons of holes are buying the 7″ due to quicker/less work. From here out, a guy can be drilling in 30-50 inches of ice. Now, go drill a 150 holes with a 7″ vs. a 10″ auger. I’m guessing your back and arms will be able to tell the difference.

Of course you give up a bit by going to the smaller hole also. It’s a bit trickier getting a big fish started up the hole. Although if they come unbuttoned in the hole, it’s often harder for them to turn and run.

I don’t do anything special to care or protect it so I’m not sure one needs to be “extra careful” in any way.

James and I are slightly different in this respect.

I don’t care what brand of flasher/camera/auger/net/PFD ect I’m using, I try to be very careful with them.

Most people wouldn’t put their laptop computer in the bottom of a portable and tow it a couple miles to a fishing location, but they will a camera/flasher/auger. Sure they are built knowing this will happen, but the laws of nature are working against the ice fisherman that does this.

Bouncing/vibration will and does put stress on solder joints, screws, bolts and nuts on equipment.

Now is it practical to carry your electronics and auger on your person to your remote fishing location? Probably not.

My point here is if we treat all of our gear like a laptop or at least try, it’s going to extend it’s life or eliminate a repair bill down the road…at the very least, it’s going to be worth more if you ever try to resell it.

I’m the same way as far being extra cautious with my gear, I pack it up the same way I brought it out…………..I have a few buddies that I go fishing with, that when the days over they just want to get off the ice,so you can imagine what their mess of gear looks like. Especially loading it up back in their truck.

I drill a ton of holes min. of 50 everytime I got out. It is lighter for when I walk out earlier and later in the seasons. Also it is faster. I always pull my ducer from the hole any way but if I can’t fit a fish around the metro that doesn’t fit up a 7in hole I will go buy a bigger auger.

I will say I fit a 44 inch muskie through one of these this winter while crappie fishing. Fatest fish I saw all year was that one.

Hey Ey’N, I think you should get a hand auger!
Let me know if you’re coming down to the cities this weekend.

Has anyone tried refilling the Coleman cylinders themselves ? Because they seemed to go up in price a bit.

For ice that is three feet thick or more the gas powered auger is the best choice.
