The Great lakes do not freeze solid. Once the waves started in the open water they break up the ice. I’ve seen pictures of houses destroyed by ice chucks being pushed on shore. I’ll bet their pants were not dry or clean.

Heres a post from another fishing site from a guy that was actually there

Not a report, but I wanted to give a word of caution for all whom venture out icefishing on the big lake. I am sure most of you heard, but for those who didn’t, Saxon Harbor’s ice literally shattered into pieces from near shore to over a mile out. The ice was a solid 10″ of good, safe ice and there were at least 50 people on it when a extreme low front came through and 6-8 ft. waves came in under the ice and literally destroyed the ice within minutes. I personally was about 1/2 mile from shore when it happened. Words cannot describe what we all went through scrambling to get back to the shore, jumping 1-5 ft. leads of open water between ice flows while it is surging in those horrible waves. The whole time we were on the ice flows the ice was smashing together and disintegrating into smaller pieces. No lives were lost thank god, but several machines went down and $1,000’s of dollars worth of fishing equipment was lost.
This experience really taught all of us involved a good lesson and that is to respect the lake and give us the mindset that anything can happen at any time without warning.

The rescue crew from Ashland did their job and saved the lives of two local guys who didn’t make it to shore in time. Those of us on shore were just sick watching those brave souls riding disintegrating ice floes in the surf knowing that at any time they could fall in and there wasn’t anything us fishermen could do to help save them. Not a good feeling…

For all you bobbers out there venturing in the islands, please be careful. The next time something like this happens, people may not be so lucky.

Wow, that would of been a scary ordeal to go threw. I don’t think I would ice fish ever again!
