for starters, rivers are never safe in my mind. that being said there are areas on lake pepin that can be good and areas near hudson too. pepin would pry be at least an hour drive for you though. check out the mississippi forums for some info.

North metro, eh? I’ve always wondered about the area just upstream from the Coon Rapids Dam, since they maintain it for a recreation pool, I thought maybe it would be more stable water? Anyone ever try up that way?

There’s also thin ice in the channel on Lake Pepin and the same around Hudson.

I’ve always had a hard time with this because if the on line directions get mixed up, I wouldn’t feel real good knowing I gave directions to someone that drown.

IMHO, people new to the ice on the river should either get a guide or go with someone that knows the area. But that’s me.

Use Google Earth (an easy Down Load) and Bathymetry to do your research. Look for back water lakes with google earth and use the Bathymetry to see what kind of depths the backwaters has to offer. This late in the season Oxygen is a good thing. You will find this in deeper water and areas that may have some flow causing turbulence in the water. Oxygen makes for active fish!

Open water season is a great time to carry the GPS and do some scouting.

I have ice fished the river right below the coon rapids dam on the north side of the river. Been many years since then. Bring a buddy and make sure to check the ice with a spud bar.
