Mendota in Madison is managed for trophy pike, with a 40″ minimum. There are some slobs in there. This one would not have been a legal fish.

wow nice fish and thanks for the info with the limit being so high u would think that it would cause an over abundance of smaller fish because there is not really any predation for pike i know that where i live in michigan we have an over abundance of small pike and i would say that lowering the limit would make more sense than raising it. kind of makes sense to let the bigger ones go and keep the smaller ones but to each his i guess ill have to give this lake a try

The pike fishing on Mendota has gotten better and better since the 40 inch limit went in. When people are keeping 25-26 inchers they never grow to be 35 plus. The panfish in Mendota are abundant and the fish just keep on growing. If you fish Mendota, Good spots to try are University Bay, the shoreline weeds along the University shore, Warner Bay, are all good places to try. Don’t be afraid to set a couple tipups in 35 feet of water about 15 feet down, some just off the weeds in 15 feet and some right below the spool right in the weeds in 5-10 feet. Good luck.

Check out Camp Lake in Kenosha county. Lots of action and you may pick up a stray walleye or two.

not too many years ago in the permanent shack days I fished Mendota strictly for pike. Havent been out there for a few years, but most of the fish caught measured between 36-38. I’ve only caught 1 legal out there that hit the tape at 41.
