I have an early 90’s Mag and am pondering upgrading to the Lazer. I would just be buying the bit, the powerhead runs way too well to put to the side. After many years of running the chipper, I have never not been able to drill a hole. Sometimes it’s ungodly slow, but it still drills until I can sharpen it. My worry is with all of the talk about mis-aligned blades and whatnot with the Lazers that are out there, so this thing better drill a lot faster. I used a buddies 224 this weekend which made me realize the improvements I could be seeing, but was curious for those who have drilled with a chipper and lazer next to each other, is the risk of mis-aligned blades and not drilling worth the reward of the speed? I have read the million other Lazer vs. Chipper threads, but was curious to hear from someone who has used them side by side. The only Lazer I have ran is an older one without the powerpoint. Does it make a big difference? Thanks

If you drill alot of holes the Lazer is well worth the money. I have and old Strikemaster XL 3000 and never had an issue with it mis-aligning.

My buddy just bought a Magnum and I can drill 2 1/2 holes by the time he drills one. I have a least one or two guys every year ask what type of power auger I have because it drills so fast.

Just got rid of a 10″ chipper, and went with the Lazer as I think there were issues with my old auger. All I can say is fishing is more enjoyable now. I’ll never shy away from punching extra holes again. I went with the 8″. From what I understand, if you are a little careful and take good care of it, not bouncing across the ice or in the back of the truck or whatever, it will be good to go for a long time. Ordered it directly from SM, and it was here two days later.

I have used a lot of strikemaster augers. I have used the chipper and an older lazer and I now have a new lazer. The lazer is far better than a chipper….so much faster. I have never had an issue with mis-aligned blades either.

Thanks for the replies! I went ahead and purchased a Lazer bit. For those looking to upgrade to a Lazer bit/whole unit, do yourself and favor and call D-Rock. I spoke to them last week looking to order one and they said to call back this week as they will have some used ones if I was interested (they used them one weekend for a tournament). I was a little apprehensive about buying used, but they give one heck of a deal on the bit and first replacement blade set! I ordered this Monday and it was at my door Tuesday.
