That last photo is a favorite of mine from a trip in Mexico. We where short a 1st mate that day so I got to drive the boat for most of the day out in the ocean. Maybe not that big of a deal but for a land lover from MN this was a dream come true.

Looks like fun Mike…
I’ve been daydreaming about liquid water now for a while too…got the hardwater blues.
January 8, 2011 at 4:04 pm #924101Just realized I had put this in the ice fishing forum.
Here are a couple of more photos from Fred Facebook page. The Tarpon photo went with the announcement about the show. With any luck we will get to see this fish caught on the show.
Im not to sure about the second photo but it looked interesting. If that was me in the kayak I would be hoping I was wearing my brown pants that day.
If any of you moderators want to move this post over to the general forum thank you. These types of photos may be upsetting to the ice fisherman.
January 8, 2011 at 4:30 pm #924104Opps. He is on right now. 11.15. They are sight casting for big Tarpon behind the tuna boats.
January 8, 2011 at 4:52 pm #924111Sorry about posting the wrong time for this show. Looks like it will be on again the next few weekends at 11 am on Versus.
That was a great show especially for me with having fished with Fred before and fishing those same areas. At the time I fished with him he told me to make sure and come back down for the Tarpon fishing. Okay. Im convinced. Sight casting for those fish looks absolutely fantastic. Great show.
I also like Freds approach to making these fish a even bigger challenge with the tackle he chooses. At the end of the show he commented on having 50# power pro rigs in the boat but with his experience level on catching these fish he chose to fish 25# power pro. He reserves the heavier pound test lines for customers with less fishing experience. I was happy to be able to catch the reds he put me on with the 25# test.
Once again great show.
January 8, 2011 at 6:03 pm #924129Here is a link to todays show. Looks like they started out with giant Red fish then went out after Tarpon. Best of both worlds.
January 8, 2011 at 6:29 pm #924132I’m headed to mexico next weekend lookin forward to some open water ocean fishing plan on fishing 2 to 3 days of 7 day trip this will be our 4th year going to Ixtappa Mexico / Ziawatanjo can’t wait for some warm weather
January 8, 2011 at 6:37 pm #924134That photo of me driving the panga is taken just south of Ziawatanjo. We went out of Barra De Pottisi. Who do you use for a Captain?
Our last trip down we where going to charter on of the pangas out of Ziawa for a double day. This was find one of the panga with a 4stroke and go way out for tuna and marlin. The pangas are much faster than the bigger boats so you can get way out faster. The 4 stroke is for better fuel consumption and less noise during the day. The double day on the trip was going to run about 6am until roughly 5pm and cost around $400. Dang cheap trip for a chance at some real quality fish. Dont drink the night before a trip like this.

January 9, 2011 at 4:03 am #924247What is really nice about going to Zihau. is the non stop flights. We used to take the early flights. 6am I think. That would put us on the beach by 11 with a drink in hand.
You also cant beat those boat prices down there. $200 day for a panga and $300 a day for a bigger boat was very common. Its been a few years since we have gone so with the slow economy they may even be less now.
Do you guys ever get south of Zihau down to Barra or even farther south? South of Petilan there is another small beach town that is extremely quiet. The 1st photo is from a restaurant on a cliff just south of that. I would guess 30 miles south of Zihau. We got to know a couple of cab drivers that would take us all over the place and cab fair would run maybe $80 to $100 bucks a day plus some food and beers. Dont want your cabby to dry out during the day.
Been a few years since we have gone but sure would love to get back down there. Last trip down we stayed in Barra.
January 9, 2011 at 5:01 am #924255No we haven’t been south of Ixtappa but know where your talkin about the direct flights are awesome and you can Jew on the boat prices as bad as it sounds we paid 240 with a case of coronas and bottle of tequla included had 3 hook ups on larger boat the 35 ft charter for 10 hrs the prices vary depending on who u talk to I have a local friend down there that says we can use his boat his cousin will guide if we give him some of the fish we catch I’d like to target for a Larger Mahi Mahi this year My sail fish was a battle was in the chair almost 2 hrs came out of water 6 times got it to the boat and ran all the line out caught the 9 ft sail on light tackle and 30lb mono which is impressive to me make a trip to Ixtappa Island if u get back down to Ziawatanjo the guys hand fishing the piers are crazy pulling 30 lb jacks in with line wrapped around hands I watched a guy about get pulled in 2 yrs agao
