slender spoon jigging cadence

What type of jigging motion do you guys like for jigging the slender spoons? I have noticed that when you rip em up they spin quite a bit and I feel like this unnatural motion might scare fish away. They do have a great swimming motion if you use a slow lift and drop cadence. So how do you guys fish em?

I let the flasher tell me what the fish want….look for reactions to the different styles. IMO….the slender spoon works best on a fall and attracts fish. It drops like a dieing minnow. Don’t be afraid to let the spoon go out of the cone angle, watch your line for it to stop on the descent, if it does start a sweeping hook set to take the slack out of your line.

Stop dropping line once your figure the spoon will stop falling and come into your cone angle at the strike zone (watch your flasher, you will see what depth your targets are coming in at). Let the spoon just sit then start an upward twitch. From there you need to figure out if they are going to hit on a fall, lift, or twitch.

Have fun and don’t be afraid to tip the hooks with bait

I should add: sometimes a quick drop and stop all the way to bottom will get a great reaction bite. Let the spoon free fall 2-3 feet at a time and come to a stop. I do this by stopping the line with my finger. If a mark is pulled below the bait the bail is closed and the mark is worked over while watching for a reaction. If the target dose not come to the offering, don’t be scared to drop the bait below and see if the fish doesn’t chase the spoon down 2-3 feet, then stop.

Just another style/look that might open the pie hole on a finned critter

I use a small barrel swivel 12-18″ above my spoons to eliminate the spinning.

Ok guys, so what I’m talking about is when you snap the jig up it tends to spin wildly on the upstroke. I love the flutter action when it falls, but the spin on the upstroke really bothers me. It seems like this is a jig that just needs a slow lift to get good action out of it.

I’m fishing for walleyes by the way.
