huminbird 35?

My cousin recently got a huminbird 35 and we took it for a test run the other day. It worked good but there was a lot of clutter at the top of the screen. At first I thought maybe it was bouncing off the ice so we ajusted it and put the ducer bellow the ice and this helped but still didn’t solve the problem. Turning the gain down also helped but it only got better when we were no longer able to see his jig. Now my question is is this normal or is there something wrong with it? If it was my unit I would just live through it but he was complaining because my VX-1 didn’t have the same problem so we swaped for a while.

    Any thoughts?

From my experience this is normal for that unit.

I received an Ice-35 for Christmas this year. Have only been able to use it on one day trip so far, but I definitely have no clutter whatsoever…in either wide or narrow beam.

Dang fish finder wouldn’t make the fish bite though…

    James,
The Humminbird is a great unit and works great. Funny how you post anytime you read the word Humminbird flasher. We all get it. Marcum is paying your bills! Your face is on the website. Humminbird, Marcum, and Vexilar are all great units! My exeperience from Marcum customer service has been poor. Google Marcum Customer service and guess what my I get

Actually I don’t think I’ve commented on more than a handful of Humminbird flasher threads since the product was originally released.

What’s “funny” about my response to the guy? Nothing in my response was derogatory towards the Humminbird in any way.

You have any issues with this response? >>> web page

I was trying to be helpful with that response too. Granted it wasn’t in regards to a MarCum unit but I was trying to lend a hand.

Back to this thread… From my experience the clutter is normal when the gain is turned up on that unit. As an aside, this is normal on ALL flashers when you have the gain turned up. The more you turn up the gain, the more clutter you’ll have on the screen as the increasing sensitivity begins to display all sorts of tiny objects in the water column. The amount of gain needed varies greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer and higher priced models within a product line typically have more power and more sensitive receivers… resulting in less gain being needed.

My response was based largely on an assumption that he had it turned up to see his jig due to his reference to losing the jig when he turned it down to reduce the clutter. Apparently you read right past this part? It seemed significant to me anyway. Granted there could be a lot more at play here as we didn’t touch on depths fished, jig size or style that might impact the ability to a sonar unit to pick up the bait in the water column, etc. It is quite common on this type of question to provide a best guess based on experience and info available.

The original poster said the unit “worked good.” So that would mean… there’s nothing wrong with the unit. And I reinforced that.

So are you saying the clutter isn’t normal and there’s something wrong with his humminbird? If so you might want to share that so this guy can get it fixed.

    Happy New Year.

First off thanks for the responses and Happy New Year. Back to the clutter issue it seems as though there is an excessive amount of clutter but this is my first experience with this unit and I’m just trying to help him out. The clutter is mostly in the top 3′ of the water colum with the worst in the top 2′ which leads me to believe that it is bouncing the signal off the ice but it doesn’t go away when lowered under the ice. Like I said earlier if it were my unit I wouold live through it but I’m just trying to help him out. Normaly this clutter wouln’t be an issue but when fishing for suspended crappie that hang out close to the ice keeping the ducer high in the hole helps tremendously due to having the wider cone angle. Sight fishing isn’t much of an option due to the water clarity and these fish just seem to stair at your bait before comitting.

Like James said, if you turn up any flasher enough, you’ll have clutter on the screen. Happens on my LX-3, my buddies FL-20, and any other flasher I’ve seen or used.

I did not have clutter on my Ice-35 unit with the gain set properly for fishing, though. This was using various smaller presentations (slender spoons, diamond jigs, gill pills, etc), in 15-25 FOW. No problem marking the small lures, and no clutter on the screen. Unless my ‘bird is an anomaly, I’d say there is something wrong with your buddy’s flasher. If I were him, I’d be making a call to Humminbird customer service.

well we took it out for another trial today with better luck the clutter was still there but wasn’t as bad. We were also in deeper water where looking at the top of the screen didn’t matter as much. We ended the day a little chilly but with enough fish for a meal and a now happy huminbird owner. Thanks for chimming in guys.
