Smaller propane tank

I’m thinking about using a 5 pound propane tank instead of using my 20 pound tank. Is there any disadvantage (other than having to full the tank more often) for using a smaller tank?

    Thanks,
    Mike

If you find a deal on 5 or 10lb tanks let me know. I don’t know why, but I’m just too stubborn to pay $40.00+ for a tank half or a quarter the size.

In cold weather U need more surface of Liquid

A flat 10 or 11 pounder (whatever they r) will work

    If U r running a small heater might not B a problem

hope this helps and someone else might have more info

    just my 2 cents

also I have a 5lb’er that is like new if U r in need of 1

    it can B filled of a twenty lb’er 2

I’d check into the cost of refilling the tank. I use to use a 11 Lb.tank and it cost me about the same cost to fill as a 20Lb. A lot of filling stations charge a set fill cost plus a cost for the # of lbs. filled. Others just charge by the Lbs. filled.

I am looking for ways to lighten the load. I was hoping a 5 pound tank would do the trick.

Where can I find an 11 pound tank in and around the Red Wing area?

Lighten the load, then go with a smaller heater and 1 or two 1 pound tanks.

I have used a 5 # for years with no issues. But I have considered switching to the squaty 11 # because the 5 # is rather top heavy with a Mr heater on top.

Will the 11 pound fit in a 5 gallon bucket?

I use a Mr.heater cooker on a 5# tank and have never had a problem with it. I have also used it on the buddy heater with no problems.

I bit the bullet (thanks for the gift, honey)and paid $40 for the 5 pounder. It cost $5.35 to fill. It’ll have it’s first use this Saturday and will use my old Mr. Heater sunflower wit hthe 6 foot hose.

I was tired of hauling the 20 pounder around. Maybe I’m a wimp or just getting older and smarter

5 lb’er works great. I drill an 8″ hole inside my shack to set it in with the Mr. Heater on top. Fits real nice and cannot tip over. A 10″ hole drilled part way through the ice might work better but I only have an 8″.

It cost me about $4.50 to get it filled when empty.

Great Idea. Do you have any trouble with freeze up(propane wont turn gas) or the tank freezing in the hole

Where do you get this refilled for $5.35? I’d pick up a 5Lb. tank if I could find someplace to fill it for that cost!!!

You have to buy the free standing sunflower heater but has anyone bought the 5′ hose connection to allow you too set your tank outside to compensate for more room in the house? Just curious because I have the 5lb tank w/heater mounted on the tank . Thinking of converting over but should I?

I’ve used the hose with a 20lber. The hose is stiff, but it does work. Sometimes hard to get the heater to sit the way you want. P.S. the hose will melt a hole in it if you let the heater get to close.

A place my wife used to work at had fiberglass 20lb tanks I have a couple of them. I know it sounds weird but they are strong and way alot less than a regular 20lb tank. Not sure if you can get them anywhere but it would be worth a look.

I just give it a tug now and then, no problem with propane at all.

I use my 5 lb with a hose if I have extra room and bring my Mr. Heater Buddy along instead of the sunflower top. I have the more flexible hose that you are supposed to use a filter with and it works just fine. I drill an 8″ hole part way through the ice for the tank to set in. Keeps it from tipping over and also the top is closer to the ice by a few inches allowing the hose to make less bend. It would work really nice if you had a 10″ hole, then the top of the tank could be put right at ice level and no worries about the tank tipping.

i never use more than two one lb ers in a full day on the ice. one hooked up to the heater and a spare. now thats lightening the load. just refill the one lb tanks off of the 16 lb er. just make sure the big tank is warm and the small tanks are cold, otherwise u only get em bout half full.

I purchased a 10lb tank (Kooty, I thought it was a 5lb) for $40 at Four Seasons in Red Wing, including the LP. I used it on Big Blake and it worked great!
