With packing and moving, the holiday season, and our oldest daughter visiting from New York it has been very hectic around here so this morning I loaded the truck and headed to Volga. When I pulled into the parking lot there was 1 mini van there but he must have been deer hunting or cross country skiing because there was nobody on the ice, this should have been my first clue. I headed out to the handicap dock and punched a hole, there is approx. 12″ of ice, put the flasher in and I’m right on top of a brush pile marking fish. I haven’t even bought any bait yet so I put a plastic on and drop it down the hole. The first 3 or 4 fish that come up to it I can’t hook, a little rusty, so I move to another spot and there’s no brush but showing fish on the bottom, I drop my line in and finally hook my first fish through the ice for 2010, a 4″ crappie, I continue in the same hole and catch 3 more 4″ to 6″. I go back to my first hole and it’s the same small crappies, last year we were catching 10″. A couple showed up as I was packing up to leave and he said that’s all they’ve been catching is those small crappies. Once I get my 4 wheeler out of the shop I’m going to head further out and see if I can find some bigger fish. It sure felt good to sit on a bucket again and pull a fish up through the ice!!!!
