First time poster, long time reader. Looking for some advice regarding my dilema. Here goes… I rec’d a Garmin 60csx for Christmas and am excited to put it to good use on the ice. I recently moved to La Crosse and fish pool 7 & 8 and Lake Macbride in Iowa, when visiting family.

I’ve learned that Navionics is not compatable with Garmin. Can I use an HD Lake Master Legacy or Insight chip in my handheld? Are they even selling the 2010 chips? I appreciate your help!

You won’t be able to use Lowrance Lakemaster chips in the Garmin unit if that is what you are asking. Unfortunately you are not able to use Navionics either. For around $100 you can purchase the Lakemaster HD for the Garmin unit. This will come in a SD card, you can download onto a SD card or you can order a CD-ROM. The nice thing that Garmin use to do if you purchased a CD-ROM, was to allow you to load the Lakemaster data on multiple Garmin handhelds for no additional cost. The handhelds just had to be registered to you.

The 60CSX is a good unit with good accuracy and fast lock. I use it for ice fishing mostly but also for hunting and driving (sometimes). Let me know with posts or PM with any other questions.

Like raapala said I would go with the CD, it is very nice to be able to have the software on a computer and view the maps on it. 17″ diagonaly is a lot bigger then 3″ diagonal.

I appreciate everyone’s help on this, I’ll definitely go with a CD-ROM. I didn’t realize the learning curve is so steep on the computer side of managing a GPS unit.

Its not so much a learning curve as being able to look at the contours of a lake with a bigger screen. It will help you find migration routes and holding areas. As well as marking areas you are interested taking a closer look at. And edit waypoint names you have added with your gps.

it’s not if you get the chip….get on the lake, look at the map, scratch your head over the endless possibilities, drill holes…

Agree with Twister!! If you like to pre-fish (look at lake contour prior to fishing the lake) then I might recommend the CD-ROM. I have that for Minnesota and I can’t tell you how nice it is to look at the Lakemaster details on a 21″ LCD screen and have all the points marked prior to fishing the lake. You can really help yourself out by doing that. You can load many maps onto the GPS unit and it really won’t be any different than having the SD card in the GPS unit. There are some advantages to the SD card I am sure, but for pre-fishing on the computer (which I like), the CD-ROM is the way to go.
