Rapala tail fins

Has anyone on here ever managed to obtain replacement fins for jigging raps? Now that Rapala is using foil-finish instead of actual paint for most of the jigging rap line-up,lost tails are a big problem.

I just counted: I have 32 tail-less jigging raps. Almost all of them have the foil finish. For a few years the ‘Chrome/red face’ was like magic on deep humps in a cisco-forage lake. I kept buying them because it was an effective bait even wthough the lack of quality was evident. That was one of their first foil-finish jigging raps but they don’t seem to have discovered a more durable finish since then.

The finish is pretty damaged on most of my tail-less raps but the bodies are just fine. I’d like to strip and repaint those bodies in colors that have proven good but are no longer made. I just need tails.

An additional problem is that most of the larger fishing lure companies – Normark included – have a “don’t call us,we’ll call you” policy. When they recieve emails like that they just disregard them. There is no phone number for “customer service” because there IS no customer service.

    Anyone know where I can get tails?…It’s #5’s,7’s and a few 9’s. Mostly #7.

    Thank you.

I spent a ton of time, trying all sorts of angles to come up with some CS number. The closest I could come up with was HR,and I wasn’t going to bug someone there for some little plastic pieces.

It seems that when it comes to discontinued lures,no-one wants to talk to the customers. The exception was Kalin’s. I remember the voice telling me “I’m sorry sir,but we’ve discontinued that color. We DO,however, have 1000 left in the warehouse from a special order.”

“Sold!” to the man with a walleye sickness.

    Thanks again.

To be honest I’ve not used that number in some time so please let us know if it is still active. The last time I used it that number was gold.

I called yesterday. The “receptionist” (?) talked to her manager and called me back. There’s been no promises but they want to see the raps I have that’re missing the tailfin.

32 jigging raps in a bag looks a little excessive to me. They didn’t look so bad occupying several compartments in my “fix someday” box but just dumped in a bag – and knowing they’re about $7/ea….

I counted the rest of my jigging raps: 40-some.

Then spoons and ice jigs for walleyes. Hundreds of panfish jigs. Dozens of rods,5 hand augers,a power auger, heaters, shanties,…and that’s just ice stuff.

Is there a 12-step group for this?

    Update:

Today I recieved a dozen jigging raps in the mail from Normark. I’m not completely pleased but they’ve definately done more than they needed to..

Accompanying the new raps was a very formal, somewhat defensive (and kind of unfriendly) letter saying – to summarize – that I had obviously used those baits for a long time in difficult conditions…it’s not possible to make an indestructable lure…They can’t do this again…They’re going above and beyond their responsibility to keep a valued customer…It’s rare for anyone to return defective product and here I have a huge pile I’m claiming to be defective…

I was not trying to shake them down for free product, and the tone of the letter implied that.

I contacted them because I wanted to find replacement tails. Sure,I took the opportunity to grumble about the inferiority of the new foil-finish compared to the old painted finish, but I wanted them to know that the jigging rap is not as good as it once was.

It is obvious that the finish peels off,and the tails are glued to the finish. The discontinued Ch/R was particularly susceptable to that, but so are the rest of the “foil” lineup….They are not defective, they’re just no longer made to last for years. They used to be.

They sent my tail-less raps back,so I’m still looking for tails.

My intention was to strip them down and repaint them. THAT’S why I started this in the first place. I have a few loose tail fins but if I could replace all of them,I’d buy an airbrush. I won’t buy it for 5 or 6 raps,I would for 30.

    That letter bugs me.

In regards to not getting any new tail fins you may consider trying to modify some colorado or indiana blades by cutting and bending them to the desired shape and glueing or soldering them on. I’ve done this on a few of mine then repainted them. They arn’t real good looking but an airbrush would solve that. Another thing you may consider is when you get new raps put some supper glue or epoxy on the inside of the tails to try and keep them from falling off.

    Just some thoughts.

Digging this one up. Has anyone ever been able to find new tail fins? I have about 25 jigging raps that are now missing tail fins. they were used on a weeklong trip and only fished in sand. I think I may have got a bad batch as I have used them in heavy rock and never lost that many fins so quickly.

I haven’t yet, but will soon make a large order from lureparts.com.
They sell a blank jigging rap with tail included (must glue yourself)

They are 1.80 ea. I’ll paint and assemble. That’s the only tail that I know can be purchased… But it obviously comes with the body too.

    Maybe give them a call!

Make a rubber mold and cast it out of plastic. I’ve made numerous gears like that.. takes some practice, but definitely do able. Smooth on should have everything you need

    Google jigging rap blank.
    Click the lureparts link

People also use clear plastic corner guard from Lowe’s type stores also.

Update…I spoke to a wonderful lady at lurecraft the other day. She was happy to send me new tail fins. Although not cheap it’s still better than having $200 in junk lead.
