Buddy Heater Help

I purchased a Big Buddy Heater this fall – used it all week at deer camp and had no issues. I had it hooked up to a 20lb tank. I took it out this afternoon to use it in the portable fish house, and after a spell the 20 pounder ran dry. Okay, I’m prepared – I unhooked the hose and screwed on a fresh 1-pounder.

I could not get it to light. I held the knob down forever, clicking the heck of of the ignitor – and nothing. I burned through almost half a box of farmer matches trying to light it that way. It was evident that fuel was blowing out of the pilot, but it wouldn’t ignite.

I didn’t have a second 1-pounder to swap out…I guess it’s possible that the tank I was using was “bad”, but that seems unlikely.

    Thoughts? Similar experiences?

I’ll pick up on the troubleshooting tomorrow PM, but thought I might benifit from some one else’s experience/wisdom. Please and thanks for your replies.

not sure if it matters but did you try the 1lb’er on both sides?

I know I haven’t had that issue at all with my big buddy.

Yeah, I tried it on both sides. Same result.

I had the same issue with my regular buddy heater. Mine would work off the hose but not the 1lb’er. The conclusion I came to is the piece on the heater that pushes down the valve on the 1lb take would not push it down far enough to open the valve and let the gas out. I hope the way I explained it makes sense. I added the mr. heater filter before the 1lb tank and it now works. Of course now the tank hangs about 3 inches lower than the base of the heater so I had to make a small frame for it to sit on.

On the one pounder…. Was it a Coleman? I have had issues with the knock off brands..

Where you running a filter on it At deer camp? Mr. Buddy recommends running a filter if using refillable tanks due to imperities in the tank! Maybe a clogged orfice?

If you ran it off of a Bulk tank without a filter you are going to have problems. A friend of mine had the same issue and never got it to run well again. I put a filter on mine and have never had a problem
