I went out last night on a local lake, which happens to be a very deep lake. The ice was good and solid, but was not very thick. On average around 4-5 inches. The majority of shallower lakes are around 12 inches, with some vehicles driving on them now. I think it is a little early for vehicles on the ice. Oh, the fishing was good with the two big fish, one around 29 inches and one around 25 inches. We dont have the snow up here in the Detroit lakes Area like the cities does, so the ice really is setting up good so far.

Does 12″ of ice have to cure for a certain amount of time? Always good to be cautious.

Michelle B. recommends harvesting some ice this winter and
burying it in sawdust in your back yard in case the terrorists attack the web and take down our power system. That way you’ll have some insurance against losing your venison and eelpout fillets.

You can also dry the venison. The last snow we recieved has some of the lakes flooding now.
