Jiffy or Strikemaster

Which auger should I buy? Looking for 8″ auger with plenty of power that cuts ice like butter. Not the top of the line model necessarily just something that will get the job done without sending me for the ibuprofen to ease my muscle pain when I’m done! Have an old Eskimo that I have to lean on pretty hard before it will take substantial bites. I’m gonna pull the trigger… tell me which one I want to buy.

I think you will get a biased opinion from this site, but I think either one will be better than what you have.

I would definitely go with the strikemaster. I bought one, and, well, thats the one I still have. Cuts ice like you wouldn’t believe, and its 8 years old if not older. I have heard bad things about jiffy, but have not personally tried one.

If you go with the strikemaster, STAY AWAY FROM THE ONES WITH THE RING ON THE BOTTOM!!!! A couple of people i know have tese models and they are notorious for freezing solid with ice chips.

I am partial to Jiffy but it’s Ford vs. Chev, Marcum vs. Vex between those two options.

    I would agree with this..

I have had both though. The jiffys will cut through anything but they are very heavy. The Strikematers cut just as good if not better in my opinion and they are much lighter. I have the Lazer mag with the 2.5 solo and love it!!!! so I guess I’ll suggest Strikemaster.

If the power head works fine why not just replace the auger? Sounds like the blade angle may be off. Have you ever tried to bang through the ice when the blade was dull, that will do it? With sharp blades even the augers with chipper blades go through the ice pretty good. I’m not trying to discourage you from buying a new auger, they are nice, just something to think about.

Its probably a toss up but I think the Strikemaster is lighter than Jiffy. I do have a lazer mag myself but a local dealership of whichever should be considered for when its repair time.

I’ve always owned StrikeMaster and will continue to do so.

Great product with great customer service. I’ve never had

a reason to look at another mfg.

My nephew is using my Lazer Mag that’s at least 10 years
old and it still cuts a hole like the day I took it out of the box.
Couple of new spark plugs and a few blade sharpenings in 10+ years.
I probably should have kept it!

    Very reliable cutting machines!

You really cant go wrong with either. I own a strikemaster lazer mag and I absolutely love it. However my buddy has a Jiffy Stealth and it does a great job too, he does have the old tecumseh engine though. I am not quite sure how the new engines are performing. Either way they will both punch a hole in the ice and get you FISHING and that is what really matters

I’d go with a strikemaster. Mine is going on almost 15 years. A few years ago it has a issue ( after who know how many thousands of holes )I took it into the strikemaster shop. A guy ran right over and said he’d take a look. After working on it for almost 1/2 Hr he brought it back over and said he replaced the gearbox and the blades were a little dull so he put on a new set. I was a little worried about how much this was going to cost me. When I asked him he said it was all on the House. I could not believe it!!!! A 12 year old+ unit was past the warranty and they put 1/2 labor and a gear box into it not to mention the new blades and it cost me nothing. That there alone made me a strikemaster owner for life. Oh ya one other thing. 2 of my fishing partners both own Jiffy’s. When ever we fish together they say let’s take your auger. They both say their next auger will be a strikemaster.

I’m still using my Jiffy. Got to be 20+ years now. Never has failed me. But the newer ones I’m not sure of. I’d look at where can I get the new one repaired. They don’t make anything like they used to. Also where and how much do you want to spend? If you buy the low end it may cost you in the end. I’ve seen new or slightly used on craigs list and they are almost always Jiffy. Take a look there and e-bay that alone may tell you which one.

Do you walk out or drive? if weight is not a problem any of the new augers will do. I have a Nils(19 lbs.)I have to walk so went lite. What ever brand you bye make sure you use good gas and oil. Non Oxy gas and Amizoil plus Seafoam works for me. Also I start mine up once a month in the summer.
