Just looking for some others opinions. I bought a Thorne Bros. 28″ perch sweet heart rod at the show last weekend and I really want to try a fly reel on it. I wasn’t smart enough to negotiate with them and buy one there, I was just too excited I guess.. Just wondering what other people are using as I’m really at a loss. Models/specs/prices. Need to get one before the weekend as it looks to be a promising!

    Any help would be appreciated.

I got my RLS Fly reel at cableas about a year ago while on sale, it appears they are on sale again right now…..I got the 3/4 size. Very nice reel. I have heard Okuma’s are nice…

    Hi,
I’m putting a Okuma SLV 2/3 on my new TB Quiverstick XL (34″) that I ordered at the Ice Show. I found one on Amazon for $47.99 (no shipping charges or tax) – it actually arrived today! The rod, on the other hand, won’t be built for another two weeks. Oh well!

    Take care,
    Roger

Another option is this: Prestige Plus fly Reel
I got one last year and have been happy with it. Good drag and reasonably light. @ $35 can’t go wrong, especially if you’re just dipping your toes in the fly reel waters.

I picked up a Prestige Plus at cabela’s last week. It was what the fly dept. associate recommended for a beginner reel, for ice fishing at least. Seems like a nice reel.

got a ross reel on a panfish sweethart….great outfit, NO line twist….heal hassle taping a fly reel on is my only complaint.

Perch rod? Is it going to be for deep perch, or double as an all around multi-purpose stick? The reason I ask is because if you fish spoons for perch, especially deep (flats, gravel, etc.) you will definitely appreciate a gear ratio, and an open bail when fishing deep and fast. Line twist isn’t really that much of an issue with heavier jigs.

Great point Dan. Getting up and down is the big issue with deep perch and with that comes heavier jigs and spoons. Those will keep your line nice and tight.
