Pulled down the bucket of Ice Rods from the rafters this weekend, and was SHOCKED to find that my St.Croix Legend was broken in the same position it was stored in. Has anyone had this similar issue? All my other rods were just fine.

Oh man…not good. I had a cheap-o rod tip break once settin’ the hook on a fish, but never comin’ out of storage. Weird.

Not a fan of St.Croix Ice Rods here,I have had 2 out of three break, I don’t think I did anything that was out of the ordinary while using them, and while they did say they would replace them, the cost of shipping was not worth sending them in for warranty.

I have to legends broke the exact same spot. Just noticed them when I went to respool my rods last week.

The tips don’t hold up well. Maybe a fat mouse walked across it while in storage.

Did you have line in it with some tension? If so, with the heat in the top of the garage during summer will cause this

The Ice Legends (like the Extreme rods) are some of the highest modulus graphite ice rods out there… I noticed the line was attached to the hook keeper, and even with the broken tip, not too much slack there…
High modulus is very brittle and will not tolerate an acute angle…if you put it away with some tension on it, that could be what happened.
Thats a $50 rod and it will only cost you about $10 to send it in for replacement…
That is why the 2011 Extreme and Legend Elite rods will incorporate NSI in their rod tips to make the tips less brittle and much more durable. Maybe the Legend Ice rods too…

Had the exact same thing happen tp me. Do not use heat to try and get the broken piece out of the tip. Use a very small drill bit or a needle to drill it out. Then sand down the rod enough that the tip will fit back on. After having 2 of them break i started making my own st. Croix nock off spring bobbers from a one legged guide, 1/8″ id grommet and a st. Croix spring.

You can’t store those things with the line and reel in. Even just being transported back and forth to the lake they can snap. Even baby cushion a meatstick, oh snap!

I will try to not let my St.Croix Legend rod break.

I agree if it was stored with the tip loaded all summer in a hot attic that may have caused it.One thing I found with soft water legends that seem to break for no good reason. They may had strutural damage prior with out breaking at the time but when stressed they snap.Had a Legend u/l snap on a 7” gill.My guess was it had hit the gunnel of the boat or maybe helped by one of my 80# labs.I have 5 or 6 of them going back to when they came out with no issues. As light as the blank is,and the way the get transported and used in below zero weather.Suprised they last the way they do some times.Maybe just hurts more when its a $50 rod instead of the $12.50 one.Sorry for your loss.Look at it this way it would cost $10.00 to replace a $10.00 rod.For 10 bucks you get a new $50.00 rod.Good Luck.

They are notorious for breaking especially the lighter action rods! I broke mine on a hook-set!

And that’s St Croix’s suggested method of storage with the spring loaded up.

I wanna say it’s going to be a lot more than $10 to replace it.

I just bought one at the end of season last year. Just checked. Stored it in a cool basement and got lucky no break.
