Was out fishin last night and the heater was actin up? i had a brand new tank of gas and everything. I would get the pilot on and the heater to start, but after about 10sec the flame would sputter and go out. This is weird because the heater has always worked. if you have any advice please help! thanks

too much pressure in the tank? I have had that happen before. I usually just switch cans of fuel. Also, when I have it sitting behind me in the bottom of the sled, if there isn’t enough air movement, it will shut itself off.
December 9, 2010 at 1:38 pm #915701I have run into issues with my Mr. Heater cooker doing the same thing on more than one occasion. A new thermocouple has fixed the issue everytime. If your talking a buddy heater I can’t help you out, never used one.

Good idea to keep a spare
December 9, 2010 at 2:24 pm #915716Try cleaning the oriface with a Q-tip. Even better to dismantle what you feel comfortable dismantling and cleaning. I used compressed air and a Q-tip (don’t use a wire).
It’a been a couple years since I did it,there’s more detailed instructions somewhere on lake-Link and elsewhere on the web…..I’ve been told that propane is a “dirty” fuel. Couple that with the fact that stuff gets into the oriface – whether it’s water leading to slight corrosion,or bugs looking for a hidey-hole during summer storage – and the tiny little hole the fuel flows thru…and it’s a wonder the Mr. Heater buddys are as reliable as they are.
Take it apart, clean it. Put it together. It ought’a work fine.
December 9, 2010 at 3:11 pm #915737there’s probably rust in the thermocouple. take apart and blow air backwards thru it. put a filter on the heater between tank and heater. worked for me, never had it happen again with a filter

Bill MetzkerPosts: 1February 14, 2018 at 9:55 am #1752282I have one of the newer ones with the front yellow colored. I have had the problem getting it to lite once it had some age to it. I can not see the original post to credit the author, but there is one, with pictures, that tells how to move the thermocouple from its original position up about a quarter of an inch. I did that and freakin’ magic, it works like a champ now. It is not a quick fix by any means however. The unit must be disassembled almost completely to get to the stupid mounting bracket for the thermocouple in order to move it. There are quite a few hidden screws to find during disassembly. But after finding them and getting over the frustration of reassembly it was well worth it.
February 14, 2018 at 5:35 pm #1752447Not sure if this is relevant but how are you shutting off your heater? I once had problems with my Big Buddy heater. I ran a 10′ hose, 20 lb tank and used the specified filter. I realized when turning off at the unit, I was trapping propane in the hose and when trying to start up next time I would go out the heater wouldn’t work. So I started making sure that I shut off the tank and let the heater burn out on it’s own. After that, I have never had another problem.
