A 59-year-old man is dead after a witness reported that his ATV went through the ice.

It happened just after 6pm Saturday night on Lake Alexander, near Camp Ripley in Morrison County.

Deputies and Firefighters say they found Gary Deppa of Cushing face down in the water at the edge of a 20-foot-hole. He had broken through thin ice.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

BE CAREFUL out there the ice is’nt stable quite anywhere yet, if you decide to brave the ice use EXTREME caution and never go alone

I bought bait from that Guys bait store on Sat. morning. There was 6-8″ of ice on the bay we were fishing. Saw 3 4 wheelers on there . One guy drilled holes all the way accross the bay and then went back and got his 4 wheeler and drove right pass the holes he check and out onto the main lake. Another guy had his wheeled house hooked up to a Geo Tracker and was thinking about pulling it out on the bay with the tracker. CRAZY PEOPLE !!!!!

Gary was an extremely nice guy, and did a great job running that bait shop. Mine and my family’s sympathies go to Deb (Gary’s wife) and the whole family there.

Was this the bait shop near access on West side of lake?
They also sell gas. Been there and that access many times over the years.

PLEASE, PLLLLEEEEASSSE be careful and smart about being on early ice

Check every step with a spud bar
    wear flotation
have picks around your neck or better yet hanging out your sleeves (don’t stuff them in a pocket)
tie a rope around your waist and let it trail along behind you
and . . . having a buddy at the trailing end of that rope is some of the best precaution available

    or travel amphibious

but please don’t get your name in the newspaper; drowning stories are (primarily) tragic for the family and (secondarily) cast a bad light on the sport of Ice Fishing in the eyes of those who don’t truly understand ice travel or ice fishing

Yes. They owned the bait store there, and he was a firefighter at the station across the street. I feel for the guys family, as well as the FF that had to attempt a rescue on a close friend.

My in-laws have a cabin a half mile down the road, so I got to know him a little, and he was a great guy who will be missed.

Please be safe out there guys
