I like to fish at night with tipups. What are people using for tip up strike indicator lights this year? I have used the HT lights for years. I like them but am tired of buying the batteries for them and some of them seem to wear and get dim even with a new battery. I also have 3 strike sensors. I find they ice up at times and sometimes for whatever reason they don’t make the pager go off or the key sticks and holds the flag down. Other systems I’ve seen seem too heavy. I am looking for something LED that runs off maybe a watch battery. Who has the best technology this year?

Do a search on YouTube, there is a guy that shows how to make them out of a door security device and a highlighter pen. Looks like a great idea!
December 3, 2010 at 7:37 pm #914344My grandpa loves using nitestrike when walleye fishing after dark. the battery seems to run for a long long long time and ddoesnt seem to freeze or not go off like many other systems. and the light on them is very bright and easy to see without the dim like most other ones also
December 3, 2010 at 7:41 pm #914348I use the Frabill Artic Siren Tip-Up Alarm.
They run on a 9 volt and I am on my 3rd year with the same batteries. The siren is nice because I just shut the shack door and wait for the siren. Great during the day. The red leds are very bright and you will not miss them at night.
December 3, 2010 at 7:56 pm #914353I have thought about those. I heard a couple guys using them last year. The only issue I would have with them is I fish in a city and I don’t want anyone to hear my bites or I’ll never get my preferred spots.
December 3, 2010 at 7:58 pm #914356You have the option for light only or lights and sirens. There is a toggle in the units on/off switch.

I clamp one on every one of my tip up flags. When I am sitting in the shack or just not paying attention I never miss a flag.
December 3, 2010 at 8:15 pm #914364I have done the same thing, put a couple small bells like they have on pet collars on the flag, worked well so far.

I got two of these, each one from a different store and they’re both junk. Both have brand new batteries. Sometimes they decide to work, sometimes they don’t.
I much prefer the Arctic Siren. Once you pull the pin, it goes off. No, ifs ands or buts. For only a buck or two more than the Arctic Fire, the only drawback is that you have to find a way to mount the units to your tipups. Just a heads up, the tape on the velcro that comes with them doesn’t stick worth a crap in the cold. you’re better off putting a drop of superglue on there.

December 3, 2010 at 9:31 pm #914388I love the Frabill tip-up lights, I use them almost every day of ice fishing, and the batteries last me at least a year. Pretty inexpensive and durable. I love them, I also put reflective tape on both sides of the flag too.

WOW that is a heck of a review coming from a guide on the water most every day!
December 4, 2010 at 3:03 am #914457frabills here also. pretty cheap and work great. nice bright light you can see from aways away.
December 5, 2010 at 3:50 am #914574Back when I used to ice fish a ton THESE are the ones I used. Never had one fail and the batteries have yet to die. The real nice thing about them is they have the 2 red lights that spin when the fish is taking out line. Fairly cheap too.
If you want really really cheap. Take some reflective tape and tape it onto the flag. Bring a spot light along and when you shine them and the flag is down the reflective tape will be horizontal. When its up it will be vertical.
Those are the 2 best things I have found over my years, and I have tried many other brands before these. Just my .02
