Its been raining for over an hour here in MPLs / Richfield and the snowpack is taking a beating. Temps are hovering in the upper 30’s and there’s a lot of water running in the streets. I haven’t had a chance to drive out past some of the local lakes to see how they’re holding up but my guess is I’d see a lot of water sitting on top. Anyone thinking about hitting the ice here in the metro should do so with added caution.

Mother nature
Looks like it will be raining here in about an hour too
November 29, 2010 at 7:12 pm #913133It’s my fault, I washed all the road salt off the boat yesterday
November 29, 2010 at 7:13 pm #913134We have enough current in the parking lot, I’m sure I see a couple spots the walleyes are staging in. I guess ice fishing this weekend may be out of the question.

But this might get you back out on the lake.

I would be willing to wash the boat again-
November 29, 2010 at 7:16 pm #913139Hopefully the rain knocks down some of the snow on the ice and then freezes…would make for faster forming at least. The week ahead looks pretty cold, should still be able to get out this coming weekend!
November 29, 2010 at 7:18 pm #913140High of 22 here on wednesday. I like your “look for the silver lining” approach to rainy days.
November 29, 2010 at 7:38 pm #913144I’m done for a while. Feel lucky I hit it yesterday. Some of the ice I fished was marginal. There’s no way this rain didnt wreck much of it. Now the quality first ice process is done. I’ll be waiting for some prolonged bitter stuff to get back on track down here.
November 29, 2010 at 7:43 pm #913146Honkers still in the fields by the thousands near Hudson.
What gives…they stand on the ice on the St. Croix all day along with about 30 seagulls and families of swans?November 29, 2010 at 8:24 pm #913161We were getting so close.
40 degrees and pouring, looks like we might be starting over with open water again

I’ll take half the blame for flooding the hockey rink, which by the way,———-IS FULL!!
November 29, 2010 at 9:34 pm #913190I saw today that some of the ice is away from the landings on the ‘Croix. I might have been a touch hasty about pickeling my motor jerr
arklite881southPosts: 5660November 30, 2010 at 1:31 am #913267From a lite rain most of the afternoon to a down pour just before dark…not looking good for the ice conditions in central MN. Guess all we can do is wait to see what happens
November 30, 2010 at 2:49 am #913292I’d have to say that I would prefer this than the heavy snow. With all the water on top of the 3″ ice that doesn’t disappear in one day of rain, I think we will be in good shape by the weekend. The snow that will fall probably won’t stick to the water covered ice for the first few inches and the rest will be all slush that will lock up hard. No more crystal clear ice, but I bet we’ll have 5″ by the weekend in some spots, besides it’s easier to sneak up on ’em with the milky ice!
November 30, 2010 at 2:50 am #913293right now it looks like a lot of rain just south of the cities and building into a possible thundershower. Not good for the current ice all we can do is look for cold weather ahead.
November 30, 2010 at 2:55 am #913296Maybe we’ll get enough rain and warm temps so we get a fresh start. Cade’s definitely correct. Better this than 6+ inches of sloppy wet snow on top of 2 inches of ice.
This is headed our way right now. Headed mostly straight north with a slight curl back towards the west. St. Paul should get hit with some of the heaviest rain from this cell.

Wanna trade for 6 inches of heavy snow??
Exactly what I was thinkning. we just got 6-8 of a cardiac snowpack. Very heavy stuff.

Cardiac snowpack
arklite881southPosts: 5660November 30, 2010 at 3:07 pm #913380That is miserable snow we just received. It won’t even come off the shovel as you nearly launch yourself into the snowbank. The ONLY good thing is it is so heavy it seems to have sunk the ice to the point that with a good freeze up over the next couple days we should be able to lock the whole works up reducing the dreaded “Blanket effect” of heavy snow cover in our bays. If this is ANY sign of our upcoming winter……Stack the Canned goods men!! This is gonna be a REAL ONE!!
December 1, 2010 at 2:24 am #913600I just wanted to report that I WAS able to get on the ice today on pool 5a. The ice was just as good as I left it on Sunday, and to my surprise there was no water on top. It seemed to have seeped through and things really firmed up with today’s cooler temperatures. I was still sitting on 3″ of ice and it was still crystal clear and hard. The fish were fickle and wouldn’t take finesse presentations but I was able to power them over with a swedish pimple and earn a nice meal of gills. Good luck guys, this weekend will for SURE be filled with a lot more options.
